Dow Jones futures advance as risk appetite rebounds ahead of busy week

  • US index futures rise as diplomatic efforts lift sentiment on Qatari and Iranian peace talks.
  • Traders await major corporate earnings, key economic data such as NFP, and remarks from a US Fed official.
  • Strong economic data and persistent inflation raise December Fed rate hike probabilities to roughly 71%.

Dow Jones futures gain 0.25% to trade around 52,050 during the European hours on Monday. Meanwhile, S&P 500 futures advance 0.37% to trade around 7,640 and Nasdaq 100 futures rise over 70% to near 28,750.

US stock futures advanced as market risk appetite increased amid ongoing diplomatic efforts to end the Middle East conflict, despite lingering fears of renewed US military action against Iran. Qatari and Iranian officials continued discussions for a third consecutive day, actively working toward an agreement to end the war ahead of the upcoming US midterm elections.

Investors are bracing for a packed week of major corporate earnings, key economic data, and political developments. Market participants are keeping a close eye on high-profile quarterly reports from major companies, including Apple, Palantir, AMD, Pfizer, and McDonald’s.

In addition to corporate earnings, traders are awaiting crucial macroeconomic events, such as the US Nonfarm Payrolls (NFP) report alongside the ISM manufacturing and services data. Remarks from several Federal Reserve officials scheduled throughout the week are also expected to provide further clarity on the central bank's monetary policy trajectory.

Despite the initial lift in risk sentiment, traders may adopt caution amid rising expectations of a potential Federal Reserve rate hike. According to the CME FedWatch Tool, traders are currently pricing in roughly a 71% chance of a December rate increase, bolstered by recent US macroeconomic data that underscores economic resilience and persistent inflation.

This week's momentum comes after major US stock indexes ended the previous week in negative territory. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite led the declines, falling 2%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 slipped 0.85% and 0.57%, respectively. Selling pressure intensified toward the end of the week as disappointing technology earnings heightened broader market concerns surrounding the sustainability of the AI trade.

US mid-term focus as Polymarket odds tilt toward Democrat control

Analysts at MUFG/BTMU note that market attention “will also be focused on the outcome from the US mid-term elections at the start of this week.” They highlight that the latest odds from Polymarket “highlight that there are high expectations that the Republicans will lose control of Congress, and the Democrats could even take both the House and Senate,” a political backdrop that is increasingly being factored into trading strategies.

Dow Jones FAQs

The Dow Jones Industrial Average, one of the oldest stock market indices in the world, is compiled of the 30 most traded stocks in the US. The index is price-weighted rather than weighted by capitalization. It is calculated by summing the prices of the constituent stocks and dividing them by a factor, currently 0.152. The index was founded by Charles Dow, who also founded the Wall Street Journal. In later years it has been criticized for not being broadly representative enough because it only tracks 30 conglomerates, unlike broader indices such as the S&P 500.

Many different factors drive the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA). The aggregate performance of the component companies revealed in quarterly company earnings reports is the main one. US and global macroeconomic data also contributes as it impacts on investor sentiment. The level of interest rates, set by the Federal Reserve (Fed), also influences the DJIA as it affects the cost of credit, on which many corporations are heavily reliant. Therefore, inflation can be a major driver as well as other metrics which impact the Fed decisions.

Dow Theory is a method for identifying the primary trend of the stock market developed by Charles Dow. A key step is to compare the direction of the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) and the Dow Jones Transportation Average (DJTA) and only follow trends where both are moving in the same direction. Volume is a confirmatory criteria. The theory uses elements of peak and trough analysis. Dow’s theory posits three trend phases: accumulation, when smart money starts buying or selling; public participation, when the wider public joins in; and distribution, when the smart money exits.

There are a number of ways to trade the DJIA. One is to use ETFs which allow investors to trade the DJIA as a single security, rather than having to buy shares in all 30 constituent companies. A leading example is the SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF (DIA). DJIA futures contracts enable traders to speculate on the future value of the index and Options provide the right, but not the obligation, to buy or sell the index at a predetermined price in the future. Mutual funds enable investors to buy a share of a diversified portfolio of DJIA stocks thus providing exposure to the overall index.
