The prediction market Polymarket might launch a crypto token soon, according to its CEO. At the annual TOKEN2049 crypto conference in Singapore on Oct. 7, CEO Shayne Coplan said that his business was considering whether to issue an "on-chain asset" that would be tied to the company's economics. Per Bloomberg, in August 2026, the prediction market was valued at $21 billion.

There isn't any token to buy yet, nor is the launch date or any specifics about the asset's tokenomics or other features known. Here's what to read up on to do your due diligence once there's a bit more information available.

Polymarket has $166 million in revenue already

The first thing to appreciate here is that Polymarket probably doesn't have a specific business need to issue a cryptocurrency. Its existing crypto protocol generated $137.5 million in revenue over the 12 months ending on Oct. 26, making it one of the industry's most used platforms. That means any new coin it launches is likely intended to be another source of income.

In terms of how the token might be structured, one path that's almost certainly under consideration is tokenized equity, meaning that the company's shares would be recorded on a token that's held on a blockchain. Polymarket isn't currently public, so this approach would be the only way for common investors to gain control of some of its shares.

But Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) staff said in January 2026 that shares of stock remain an equity security in the eyes of regulators, regardless of the technical format in which they're issued. So issuing tokenized equity would mean obeying securities law obligations, including registration requirements, and it'd also likely mean that there would be at least some limits on buyers.

The other path is for Polymarket to issue a native crypto token that is not backed by the company's equity. Hyperliquid could be the template here; it routes nearly all of its protocol fees into buying back its own token, like an automated share buyback program with no limits and no need for renewal by a board. That would be one way to tie the token to Polymarket's economics.

If Polymarket issues a separate native token, every dollar routed to holders is a dollar shareholders don't keep, so expect a stingy design.

What should you check before buying a Polymarket token?

There are three things that will largely decide whether a Polymarket token is worth owning.

First, the value-capture mechanism, such as buybacks or fee sharing. Knowing what makes a cryptocurrency valuable means insisting that the mechanism be written into code or contracts, not merely promised as a later addition.

The second element is the supply overhang, meaning the portion of the token's supply that its insiders could sell later. Learn how much insiders hold and when they're allowed to sell.

The final thing is to see where the token gets listed. Polymarket's international site excludes U.S. residents, so a token could debut on exchanges Americans can't use.

Until the official launch announcement, treat any Polymarket token as fake. If a token design is published in the next few quarters, take a look, as it's probably worth considering even if it's not the right pick for everyone.

Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again

In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. If you’d invested $5,000 then, you’d be sitting on $2,807,778 today.*

Now, for the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. It’s a key player in the $1.8 trillion space race, and with the stock recently sitting 20% off its highs, the window to get in early is closing fast.
