Shares of Philadelphia-based specialty metals company Carpenter Technology Corporation (NYSE:CRS) imploded on Thursday, falling 22.2% through 12:50 p.m. ET after reporting mixed earnings this morning.

Analysts forecast Carpenter to earn $3.04 per share -- and Carpenter beat that number, reporting a $3.25 per share profit for its fiscal Q1 2027. However, analysts also forecast Carpenter to do $830.8 million in sales, but the most Carpenter could manage was $798.5 million.

Carpenter Technology Q1 earnings

That's actually not a bad number, though: "$798.5 million." In fact, it's 28% more revenue than Carpenter generated in Q1 2026, and it set a new company sales record. (Earnings also set a new record, with net profit per diluted share rising 34%.)

CEO Tony Thene highlighted upticks in Carpenter's aerospace structural and distribution sub-markets, where bookings for future shipments increased 49% year over year. That's faster growth than revenue grew in Q1, and implies that revenue growth will only accelerate in future quarters. Thene further pointed out that prices are increasing in tandem with sales, boosting profit margins.

What's next for Carpenter stock

If all this is the case, though, then why did investors react so negatively to Carpenter's news?

Free cash flow -- or rather the lack of it -- may be one reason. Despite reporting $162.5 million in GAAP net profit, Carpenter actually didn't generate any free cash flow at all. Instead, it burned nearly $25 million on increased capital spending, in particular to expand production at a "brownfield" factory.

Valuation could be another concern. Carpenter stock currently trades at 32x trailing earnings, but analysts forecast only 21.5% long-term annual earnings growth. The resulting PEG ratio of 1.5 suggests that Carpenter stock may already be moderately overpriced and due for a pullback.

In fact, that pullback may have already begun.
