On its third quarter of 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 21, 2026, QuantumScape (NASDAQ:QS) announced a planned 100-megawatt-hour battery production line targeting non-automotive markets by 2028. Expanding into high-value data center and defense markets offers a faster path to commercial revenue than electric vehicles alone. Three key takeaways explain how management plans to execute this shift.

1. QuantumScape Plans 100 Megawatt-Hour Line for Direct Sales

Management is scaling beyond its pilot line to directly supply non-automotive customers while maintaining a capital-light licensing strategy for electric vehicles. The planned facility targets start of production in 2028 for the company's QSDC, or QuantumScape Data Center, and QSAS, or QuantumScape Advanced Solutions, business verticals.

Today, we announced a 100 megawatt hour mass production line with output aimed at meeting the rapidly emerging opportunities for our QSDC and QSAS business verticals.
-- Dr. Srinivasan Sivaram, Chief Executive Officer

2. Data Center Power Block Opens Immediate Growth Opportunity

AI data centers require high-density power systems that handle load spikes without risking fires or catastrophic heat failure. QuantumScape's solid-state design delivers longer run times than standard LFP, or lithium iron phosphate, batteries while exceeding baseline specs from OCP, or Open Compute Project.

In testing, the QS power block demonstrated 4x the power density and 5x longer run time than the reference specification from OCP.
-- Dr. Srinivasan Sivaram, Chief Executive Officer

3. Automotive Strategy Focuses on Standardized Platform Licensing

QuantumScape recorded its first customer billings from Honda during the third quarter and signed a new agreement with a global mobility manufacturer. Management is working to align all automaker partners around a single core solid-state technology platform beyond its QSE-5 battery cell.

Our aim is to bring all of our automotive customers onto a common technology platform.
-- Dr. Srinivasan Sivaram, Chief Executive Officer

Looking Ahead

Demand across data center and defense markets is accelerating, and management is expanding ecosystem partnerships to build out manufacturing capacity. Domestic manufacturing control and a graphite-free supply chain give QuantumScape a structural edge in serving sensitive American infrastructure as management maintains its full-year guidance for adjusted EBITDA, or earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization.

For full year 2026, we reiterate our adjusted EBITDA loss guidance of between $250 million and $275 million.
-- Agnes Penn, Chief Accounting Officer

By pairing component suppliers with automated assembly equipment partners, QuantumScape is securing an end-to-end production pipeline. This strategy allows the business to serve high-value markets directly while relying on licensing partnerships to scale automotive volume.

With Murata, Corning, and Mühlbauer, we have now announced partnerships with global players along the entire production flow.
