Social Security recipients may, at this point, be used to getting bad news. Just search for the words "Social Security" online, and you'll learn all about how the program's trust funds are running dry, potentially leading to broad benefit cuts.

But earlier this month, some good news came through on Social Security. The Social Security Administration announced that in 2027, benefits will receive a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA). That's a significantly larger increase than the 2.8% COLA that arrived this past January.

A 3.6% Social Security COLA might seem like a huge win. But if you're struggling financially right now, it may not change your situation all that much.

Why you can't just bank on your upcoming COLA

The reason a 3.6% COLA may not significantly change your financial picture boils down to what those raises are meant to do. The purpose of Social Security COLAs is to help benefits keep up with inflation, not beat it.

Social Security COLAs are based on third-quarter changes to the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W). The raise that arrives in January is intended to help offset recently elevated costs. But that doesn't mean you'll suddenly enjoy a lot more buying power in the new year.

In fact, if anything, Social Security benefits have lost buying power through the years because the CPI-W formula is flawed. It measures the costs incurred by working Americans, whose expenses tend to differ from those of retirees on Social Security. So the 2027 COLA, despite being generous, may not hold up well.

How to improve your finances in the new year

If you're having a hard time making ends meet, rather than sit back and wait for your 3.6% COLA to hit your Social Security checks, you may want to take matters into your own hands. Look closely at your spending and see if there's room to trim expenses. There may not be, but it's worth doing that audit to make sure.

Next, see if you can boost your income with part-time work. That could mean a scheduled job or a stint in the gig economy. If you're able to earn a few hundred dollars a week, it could give you the breathing room you need to keep up with your expenses.

Finally, consider relocating if there are areas in the U.S. that are cheaper overall than your current one. A change of location could provide relief, but you'll of course need to make sure you can swing the cost of a move.

A 3.6% Social Security COLA might be a welcome surprise compared to recent increases. But if you're struggling now, that COLA won't be enough to make a meaningful change. You'll need to take matters into your own hands if you want 2027 to look notably different, financially speaking.
