VinFast delivered 70,085 electric four-wheelers in the second quarter.
VinFast acquired a 20% interest in the Hanoi Sports Urban project.
Vietnam manufacturing asset disposal reduced external borrowings by $2.9 billion.
On its second quarter of 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 19, 2026, VinFast (NASDAQ:VFS) announced a transition to an asset-light manufacturing structure in Vietnam to lower capital intensity. The company's strategic shift aims to improve cash flow and speed up product development as the electric vehicle (EV) maker faces heavy operating losses. Three things management said stand out.
VinFast transferred its Vietnam manufacturing assets to lower plant depreciation and debt expenses while maintaining access to production capacity through long-term supplier agreements. This structural pivot frees up balance sheet capital for software development, international sales growth, and new vehicle designs.
Moving to an asset-light manufacturing model allow us to allocate more capital to technology, product and international expansion while maintaining control over the capabilities that are critical to our long-term competitiveness.
-- Chien Nguyen, Chief Investment Officer
The company acquired a 20% economic interest in the Hanoi International Sports Urban Area smart city project to generate secondary revenue outside automotive sales. Management intends to use recurring distributions from property development starting in 2027 to cover electric vehicle operating losses and debt obligations.
The project is expected to generate substantial profit and recurring cash flows, helping offset ongoing EV business losses and strengthening VinFast's financial position and diversify source of debt repayment.
-- Chien Nguyen, Chief Investment Officer
Rather than paying third-party vendors for advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), VinFast built its level two driver assistance suite internally for the new VF 8 model. Controlling software engineering reduces component costs while allowing faster over-the-air updates across future product lines.
We used to license the technologies and now we develop these capabilities in-house at a fraction of the previous cost. More importantly, this creates a scalable technology foundation that paves the way for future model launches.
-- Chien Nguyen, Chief Investment Officer
Vehicle deliveries are accelerating across Southeast Asia as factory production expands. Management isn't hiding its focus on operational execution as international markets scale.
Over the next 18 to 24 months, our focus is on translating the scale we have built on a stronger and more sustainable economical model.
-- Pham Nhat Quan Anh, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Directors
Regional factory investments and expanding dealership networks provide local manufacturing advantages, while in-house software capabilities protect operating margins. Execution depends on pricing discipline and capital allocation.
Our objective is, therefore, not simply to grow revenue, but to build a business with a stronger balance between growth, capital efficiency, and financial sustainability.
