Northrop Grumman: 3 Key Takeaways for Long-Term Investors

Source The Motley Fool

Key Points

  • Backlog reached $110 billion with a 1.5x book-to-bill ratio.

  • Management projects sales growth from 5% to 7% in 2027.

  • Third-quarter sales rose 7% year over year to $11.1 billion.

  • Motley Fool Issues Rare "Total Conviction" Buy Alert ›

On its third quarter of 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 20, 2026, Northrop Grumman (NYSE:NOC) announced higher segment operating income guidance and accelerating sales momentum for 2027. Defense spending demands give the defense contractor multiyear visibility across major stealth bomber and strategic defense programs.

Three things management said stand out.

1. Record $110 Billion Backlog Provides Multiyear Revenue Visibility

Defense demand pushed new quarterly orders well past billed work, lifting the backlog, or cumulative value of contracted future orders, to a company record. That order volume secures years of predictable defense production.

In the quarter, our book to bill was 1.5x, which drove a new record backlog of $110 billion reflecting robust demand and years of durable sales.
-- Kathy J. Warden, Chair, Chief Executive Officer and President

2. Organic Sales Growth Will Accelerate From 5% to 7% in 2027

Management expects revenue expansion to speed up next year across all four operating segments. Higher production rates on key defense programs like the B-21 Raider bomber drive the faster operational pace.

For 2027, we project sales growth between 5% and 7%, representing further acceleration from the growth expected this year.
-- John Thomas Greene, Chief Financial Officer

3. Microelectronics and Quantum Tech Offer Commercial Expansion Potential

Northrop Grumman is exploring options to commercialize specialized microelectronics like Fortitude, a tiny microchip designed to deliver up to three times the power of existing solutions. Expanding beyond traditional defense contracts gives management new options to capture commercial tech spending.

Fortitude clearly is mature technology. Quantum is toward some very important technical milestones in the next couple of years. But we see both of them as addressing very large both defense and commercial markets.
-- Kathy J. Warden, Chair, Chief Executive Officer and President

Looking Ahead

Backlog growth reached 20% year over year, giving Northrop Grumman clear visibility across its defense franchises. Structural advantages in microelectronics and stealth manufacturing support long-term pricing discipline and expansion.

Momentum continues to build throughout our portfolio. As Kathy shared, backlog increased 20% to $110 billion compared to the third quarter of last year.
-- John Thomas Greene, Chief Financial Officer

Operational execution and expanding international sales bolster the long-term thesis. Capital investments in manufacturing capacity support higher program throughput.

That strategy is translating directly into our financial results, and it provides a visible runway for durable long-term growth.
-- John Thomas Greene, Chief Financial Officer

Dollar presses 102 as the 10-year yield sits at 5.14% — and October hike odds are only 17%The dollar index closed at 101.99 (+0.20%) on Monday after briefly topping 102.07, while the 10-year Treasury yield rose to 5.14% and the 2-year hit 4.774% — yet futures price only about a 17% chance of a hike at the October 27-28 FOMC, versus roughly 90% for December. The driver is a global bond selloff, not a Fed repricing: France's 10-year OAT jumped to 4.84% ~ 4.94% and the OAT-Bund spread widened to 140 ~ 146bp. Here are the levels, the cross-asset read-through and what to watch.
