Investors often choose between traditional entertainment giants and digital-first platforms. Deciding whether to buy AMC Entertainment (NYSE:AMC) or Roblox (NYSE:RBLX) requires balancing recovery potential against high-growth digital engagement in 2026.

AMC operates the largest movie theater circuit globally, relying on physical attendance and blockbuster film cycles. Roblox provides an immersive 3D platform where users create and interact in virtual worlds. While both stocks capture consumer leisure time, they operate under vastly different financial structures and growth trajectories.

The case for AMC Entertainment

AMC operates approximately 860 theaters and 9,600 screens globally, focusing on premium large-format experiences. In its latest annual report, filed for the year ending 2025, the company highlighted its reliance on major movie studio distributors, which accounted for roughly 83% of its U.S. admissions revenue.

In 2025, revenue reached nearly $4.8 billion, representing growth of roughly 4.6% over the prior year. Despite this growth, the company reported a net loss of approximately $632.4 million.

As of its June 2026 balance sheet, the debt-to-equity ratio was-5.3x, meaning total liabilities exceeded shareholders' equity. The current ratio, which measures a company's ability to pay short-term obligations with short-term assets, is approximately 0.5x.

Trailing-12-month (TTM) free cash flow through Q2 2026 was negative $22 million, a significant improvement from the negative $366 million reported for the full year 2025.

The case for Roblox

Roblox operates as a user-generated platform where over 123 million daily active users discover and create 3D experiences. In its 2025 annual report, the company identified its primary distribution channels as Apple and Google. It also maintains a strategic partnership with Tencent and relies on Amazon for cloud infrastructure.

In 2025, revenue reached close to $4.9 billion, a significant 36% increase over the previous fiscal period. However, the company reported a net loss of nearly $1.1 billion. While top-line growth is robust, the company has not yet achieved net income profitability due to high infrastructure and developer costs.

As of its June 2026 balance sheet, the debt-to-equity ratio was approximately 13x, calculated by dividing total debt by shareholder equity.

TTM free cash flow was positive at roughly $1.6 billion, up from nearly $1.4 billion in 2025.

Risk profile comparison

AMC Entertainment faces risks related to its substantial indebtedness and liquidity constraints, which could eventually require additional capital. The company also deals with extreme volatility in its stock price, often driven by retail investor trading dynamics. Competition remains a primary threat, as streaming services like Netflix and other digital platforms vie for consumer attention.

Roblox carries significant exposure to legal and regulatory proceedings, particularly regarding child safety and data privacy on its platform. The company relies heavily on third-party providers such as Apple and Amazon, which set the terms and fee structures for its distribution. Furthermore, the dual-class stock structure concentrates voting control in the hands of its founder, limiting the influence of individual shareholders.

Valuation comparison

AMC Entertainment appears significantly cheaper on a price-to-sales basis, while Roblox trades at a much higher premium due to its rapid growth and positive cash flow generation.

Which stock would I buy in 2026?

AMC has reported negative free cash flow every year since 2020, while Roblox continues to grow free cash flow as its platform reaches more users. Roblox is the stock I would buy right now.

AMC has limited growth prospects, with nearly half the U.S. population within 10 miles of one of its theatres. Roblox ended the second quarter of 2026 with 123 million daily active users, up 10% year over year, while management aims to grow the platform to 1 billion users over the long term.

However, Roblox bookings (a non-GAAP measure of revenue) have slowed this year as management implemented age checks on the platform, disrupting monetization. These growing pains have caused the stock to fall well below its highs, presenting investors with a great opportunity to buy shares at an attractive valuation.

Roblox has a history of growing revenue, free cash flow, and daily active users, while AMC has shown limited growth potential and negative free cash flow. Roblox is the better business, trading at a reasonable price-to-free-cash-flow multiple of 22.
