Key Points

  • The company’s massive scale results in tremendous profitability.

  • Even if the valuation multiple compresses, the business should be able to join the trillion-dollar club.

If the Visa (NYSE: V) network suddenly stopped working, the global economy wouldn't function properly. The business connects various stakeholders through its ubiquitous payments platform to facilitate commerce. It's a mission-critical link in how money moves.

The scale is unmatched, with billions of cards accepted at nearly 200 million merchants, driving trillions of dollars in payment volume. This is the result of a durable competitive moat that has driven the company's valuation to $752 billion today.

This financial stock trades in record territory, having climbed 15% in 2026 (as of Oct. 16). Investors should expect the winning streak to continue.

By 2030, I believe there's a very good probability that Visa will enter the $1 trillion club. Here's why.

The growth is profitable and durable

The first reason Visa will become a trillion-dollar stock in four years is the growth tailwind it sits atop. The world is shifting to cashless and digital payments. According to research from Bill Ackman's Pershing Square Capital Management, consumer card spending has only captured half of its total addressable market. Visa is staring at a massive opportunity ahead that can help it grow cards outstanding, merchant acceptance locations, and dollar volume.

Besides fees collected for processing transactions, value-added services have proven to be a major boost. Things like fraud detection, data analytics, and advisory solutions are material money-making activities. Revenue here jumped 36% year over year in the third quarter (ended June 30) to $3.8 billion. This segment represents 33% of the company's overall business.

All of this fuels the bottom line. Visa is one of the most profitable companies on the planet. Its net profit margin last fiscal quarter was a robust 48%. That's impressive compared to the 17% average of the S&P 500 index. This is the power of running a scaled payment platform; marginal costs are low.

According to consensus analyst estimates, Visa's earnings per share (EPS) will grow at a compound annual rate of 14% from fiscal 2025 to fiscal 2028. If that pace slows to 12% before the end of the decade, it means that in fiscal 2030, Visa's EPS could total $21.37. History suggests this is likely.

Visa shares could get cheaper relative to earnings

If Visa's valuation remained unchanged, projected EPS growth would push the market cap to $1.2 trillion in four years. And the stock's performance would mirror that bottom-line gain.

But there's a possibility that shares get cheaper relative to profits. The stock trades at a price-to-earnings ratio of 34.6. That's above its five-year average. Given that this is an elite business, I don't believe the multiple will fall below 30. At that level, its market cap in 2030 would still be well above $1 trillion.
