The e-commerce landscape is shifting as regional giants and global software leaders battle for market share. Deciding between MercadoLibre (NASDAQ:MELI) and Shopify (NASDAQ:SHOP) requires weighing hyper-local execution against worldwide scale.

MercadoLibre operates a vertically integrated marketplace and payments system tailored for the unique challenges of Latin America. Shopify offers a versatile software infrastructure that enables merchants to build independent brands globally. Both companies are core holdings for investors seeking exposure to digital commerce, but they vary significantly in valuation and regional focus.

The case for MercadoLibre

MercadoLibre operates a vast ecosystem through its marketplace and its fintech arm, Mercado Pago. Among retail stocks, it differentiates itself by providing logistics and credit solutions to millions of users. The company partners with Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) and Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) for its cloud infrastructure while integrating services from Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) into its loyalty programs.

In FY 2025, revenue reached nearly $28.9 billion, representing a significant 39.1% increase over the prior year. This expansion was supported by a net income of approximately $2.0 billion. The company continues to benefit from its dual-engine model, in which its marketplace drives adoption of its financial services, resulting in a net margin of nearly 6.9%.

As of its December 2025 balance sheet, the current ratio, which measures the ability to cover short-term debts with short-term assets, stands at nearly 1.2x. The debt-to-equity ratio, representing total debt as a proportion of shareholder equity, is roughly 1.7x. Free cash flow, calculated as cash from operations minus capital expenditures, reached nearly $10.8 billion during the same fiscal period.

The case for Shopify

Shopify provides the essential internet infrastructure that allows merchants of all sizes to start, run, and grow their businesses. The platform serves millions of businesses globally, providing tools for sales across web, mobile, and physical locations. It maintains strategic dependencies on Alphabet for cloud hosting and integrates payment services from providers like Stripe and PayPal to streamline merchant operations.

In FY 2025, revenue reached nearly $11.6 billion, marking a growth of approximately 30.1% over the previous twelve months. The company reported a net income of roughly $1.2 billion for the year, achieving a net margin of nearly 10.7%. This growth illustrates the continued demand for independent storefront solutions as more businesses move away from centralized third-party marketplaces.

As of its December 2025 balance sheet, Shopify has a debt-to-equity ratio of 0.0x, indicating negligible debt relative to its shareholders' equity. The current ratio stands at a robust 6.0x, providing significant liquidity for future investments. Free cash flow reached nearly $2.0 billion, though note that stock-based compensation accounted for roughly 22.1% of operating cash flow, inflating reported cash generation because it is a non-cash expense.

Risk profile comparison

MercadoLibre faces significant risks from intensifying competition, particularly from Asian e-commerce entrants employing aggressive pricing and logistics strategies. The company is sensitive to macro-economic volatility in Latin America, including high inflation and currency devaluations. Regulatory risks are also acute, as its fintech arm operates under varying financial regimes and faces evolving antitrust scrutiny regarding its platform algorithms and logistics integration.

Shopify faces intense competition from established platforms like Amazon and niche providers, with risks amplified by the potential integration of competing technologies. The company is susceptible to macroeconomic downturns, which disproportionately affect its small and medium-sized merchant base. Legal and regulatory risks include evolving privacy laws, potential liability for merchant activities, and reliance on third-party cloud providers and artificial intelligence models for core operations.

Valuation comparison

MercadoLibre offers a lower valuation on both an earnings and sales basis compared to the premium pricing currently assigned to Shopify.

Which stock would I buy in 2026?

To compare MercadoLibre and Shopify, investors should consider a few key factors. Let's have a look at them and see what that tells us about each stock.

To start, there's growth. Let me be clear: Both of these companies have excellent growth. Over the last five years, MercadoLibre has averaged 44% year-over-year revenue growth. Shopify, meanwhile, has averaged 27%. Moreover, these are not small companies. MercadoLibre has generated about $35.2 billion in revenue over the last 12 months; Shopify has recorded about $13.3 billion. Nevertheless, MercadoLibre comes out ahead in the head-to-head comparison given its exceptional revenue growth.

Another factor to consider is each company's valuation. We'll use forward price-to-earnings (P/E) to compare them. MercadoLibre's forward P/E is 49x, which is well above the market average. However, Shopify's 91x forward P/E multiple is not quite double that of MercadoLibre. While both companies are far from value darlings, MercadoLibre gains the edge in this category.

Last, we should take a closer look at each company's balance sheet. In short, both have solid balance sheets. Shopify has over $4.7 billion in net cash, giving it plenty of room for future acquisitions, capital investments, or stock buybacks. MercadoLibre, meanwhile, has around $484 million in net cash, meaning it can easily cover its debt obligations with cash alone.

In summary, both stocks are worthy of serious consideration for growth-oriented investors. However, if forced to choose between the two, I prefer MercadoLibre for its faster growth and relatively more modest valuation.
