Key Points

  • Historical evidence suggests that Bitcoin typically trades in a four-year cycle of boom and bust.

  • If this is the case, Bitcoin may have already bottomed and could be ready to rally in 2027.

  • While there is no guarantee that this four-year cycle will repeat, it can offer insights about where Bitcoin is headed next.

In June, Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) briefly dipped below the $60,000 price level. Three months later, Bitcoin is now trading at $85,000, a 40% rally that almost nobody saw coming.

That could be the clearest signal yet that Bitcoin is about to go on another stunning bull market rally. In fact, if history is any guide, Bitcoin could soar in value next year. By the end of 2027, Bitcoin could be trading near a new all-time high.

The four-year Bitcoin cycle

Long-time Bitcoin investors recognize that the world's most popular cryptocurrency typically trades in four-year cycles. Even top Wall Street investment banks have recognized the potential validity of the Bitcoin four-year cycle. Three of those years are typically very bullish, while the final year of the cycle is a big plunge.

This has now happened four times in Bitcoin's history, and the cycles occur with stunning regularity. What makes this possible is the Bitcoin halving, an event that occurs every four years. The halving reduces the rate of new Bitcoin creation by half, and that typically jump-starts a blistering Bitcoin rally.

So let's look at the historical data:

  • In 2023, Bitcoin soared in value by 155% just one year ahead of its 2024 halving.
  • In 2019, Bitcoin soared by 92% ahead of its 2020 halving.
  • In 2015, Bitcoin rallied by 34% ahead of its 2016 halving.

That's why Bitcoin's recent performance is so encouraging for crypto investors: It means Bitcoin may have already bottomed. Bitcoin hit a peak of $126,000 back in October. So it's been nearly a year from peak to trough.

If you buy into the four-year cycle, Bitcoin is due for a recovery. Crypto investors have now survived the one bad year they know they will get from Bitcoin in each cycle.

Moreover, in its entire existence, Bitcoin has never had back-to-back losing years. That makes me think that Bitcoin's recent stinker of a performance in 2025 won't be repeated this year. Right now, Bitcoin is only down less than 2% for the year. A positive year is within sight.

With just a modicum of momentum, Bitcoin could be back in positive territory by the end of October. This, incidentally, happens to be one of the best months of the year for Bitcoin. For good reason, crypto investors refer to October as "Uptober."

Bitcoin's next halving will take place in April 2028. That leads me to think that the 18 months between then and now will be remarkably bullish for Bitcoin. There is typically an intensifying recovery heading into the halving, followed by an explosion of price activity after the halving.

And I'm not the only one who thinks this. Coinbase Global Chief Executive Officer Brian Armstrong has also suggested that Bitcoin now will rally hard into its April 2028 halving. He's now predicting that Bitcoin could soar as high as $400,000 by 2030.

Past performance is no guarantee of future performance

However, just keep in mind: Past performance is no guarantee of future results. Just because Bitcoin has traded in four-year cycles throughout its existence is no guarantee it will continue to do so.

That's especially the case, given that Bitcoin has no clear catalysts on the horizon. The Clarity Act failed to pass the Senate in mid-September, yet the price of Bitcoin rose. The Federal Reserve hiked interest rates in September, and yet the price of Bitcoin went up. Both factors should have been very negative for Bitcoin. They were not.

So it's up to you to decide whether this Bitcoin rally is for real. Admittedly, it takes some suspension of disbelief to think that Bitcoin can continue to gain ground without a clear catalyst ahead.

Nevertheless, I'm leaning into Bitcoin's historical track record. If history is any guide, Bitcoin has already bottomed, and crypto investors are about to be rewarded for their patience ahead of the 2028 halving.
