Billionaire Tim Draper Predicts Bitcoin Will Hit $250,000 Within 2 Years. Here's What Needs to Happen.

Key Points

  • Silicon VC Tim Draper predicts that Bitcoin will hit $250,000 by the end of 2028.

  • Draper has made similar predictions in the past, each one based on much higher rates of adoption for Bitcoin.

  • While investing in Bitcoin has gone mainstream, everyday use of it for commerce has not.

Silicon Valley venture capitalist Tim Draper now expects Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) to hit a price of $250,000 within the next 2 years. If that sounds familiar, that's because it is. For nearly five years, Draper has been banging the table for Bitcoin to hit that mark.

So what's different this time around? Let's take a closer look at what could catalyze a tripling in the value of Bitcoin by 2028.

Missed AI’s "Act 1"? Act 2 Could Be 15x Bigger. Most investors think they missed the AI boat because they didn't buy Nvidia in 2005. But according to our analysts, we’re only at the end of "Act 1"—the R&D phase. "Act 2" is the global rollout. Continue »

Past catalysts for Bitcoin

Over the past few years, Draper has proposed several potential catalysts that could send Bitcoin skyrocketing. His overarching idea has always been that growing rates of adoption, spurred by easier everyday use of crypto, will send the price of Bitcoin much higher.

For example, Draper has suggested that Bitcoin might one day become much more popular for daily commerce. Think of retailers preferring to be paid in Bitcoin rather than dollars. Or rich crypto investors using Bitcoin to buy homes, cars, and big-ticket luxury goods. Bitcoin, after all, is a digital currency originally conceived by Satoshi Nakamoto for peer-to-peer transactions.

Draper has also suggested that demographic changes might spur much higher rates of Bitcoin adoption. At one time, he suggested that closing the gender gap in crypto might lead to more women investors using Bitcoin. He has also suggested that younger generations, growing up as crypto natives, might be more willing to buy, hold, and use digital assets such as Bitcoin.

Overall, Draper has painted a rosy, optimistic view of the future powered by blockchain technology, innovations (such as smart contracts), and digital assets. Over time, traditional financial intermediaries will be swept away, leading to lower costs and greater efficiency. At some point, Bitcoin will become so easy to use that it will be impossible to ignore.

A new catalyst for Bitcoin?

Unfortunately, all of these catalysts have failed to materialize as planned. Bitcoin has never come close to hitting $250,000. The closest it came was in October 2025, when it hit a price roughly one-half of that ($126,000).

Interestingly, Draper now points to artificial intelligence (AI) as a potential catalyst for Bitcoin. This might happen in several different ways. For example, AI might accelerate the introduction of new products or services within the Bitcoin blockchain ecosystem. Or it might lead to AI agents transacting among themselves in Bitcoin.

But I'm not entirely sold on this idea. AI has been touted as the panacea for almost everything these days, and now it's being touted as the cure for what ails the crypto industry. Just sprinkle a little AI on top of crypto, and it'll start soaring in value again?

I'm still long-term bullish on Bitcoin. But with the Clarity Act now on indefinite hold, I just don't see a clear path for Bitcoin to hit $250,000 in 24 months.
