Every generation of investors has witnessed companies that not only built successful businesses but also created entirely new industries.

Electric vehicles transformed the automotive market. Cloud computing reshaped enterprise software. And more recently, artificial intelligence has fueled a massive wave of investment in chips, data centers, and digital infrastructure.

Could deep-sea mining be next? That's the question investors are asking about The Metals Company (NASDAQ: TMC). The company has attracted significant attention for its plan to collect metal-rich polymetallic nodules from the Pacific Ocean floor rather than mining them on land.

So, could The Metals Company become a millionaire-maker stock?

The opportunity is much bigger than one mining project

At first glance, The Metals Company appears to be another mining company. In reality, it is exploring an entirely new way to source critical minerals.

The core thesis here centers on four metals: nickel, copper, cobalt, and manganese. The demand for these metals is expected to grow over time as countries expand electricity grids, build more artificial intelligence data centers, modernize infrastructure, and strengthen domestic supply chains for strategically important materials.

Meanwhile, developing new land-based mines has become increasingly expensive and time-consuming. Large projects often require years of regulatory approvals, billions of dollars in capital investment, and extensive environmental reviews before production can even begin.

Enter The Metals Company. The company believes polymetallic nodules -- potato-sized minerals concretions -- lying on the seabed could provide another source of these metals. If deep-sea mining proves commercially viable, the company's addressable market could be enormous.

TMC isn't a typical mining business

Most mining companies follow a familiar model. They discover a deposit, spend years developing a mine, extract the resource, and eventually move on once the deposit is depleted.

The Metals Company's approach is different.

The company plans to collect polymetallic nodules that already rest unattached on the ocean floor. Specialized machines would gather the nodules, transport them to the surface, and send them to processing facilities for the extraction of nickel, copper, cobalt, and manganese.

If the model works, the company's competitive advantage may extend beyond the resource itself -- including developing engineering and operational know-how and obtaining the necessary regulatory approvals -- which could become important barriers for future competitors.

While being first doesn't guarantee success, it can provide valuable experience in industries that require specialized technology and complex operations.

What has to go right?

But before investors get too excited, it's important to note that the company still has plenty to do before it generates its first revenue.

First, TMC must secure the approvals needed to begin commercial operations. Without regulatory approval, there is no business.

Second, it must prove that deep-sea collection can operate reliably and economically at a commercial scale. Demonstration projects are one thing, but running a profitable operation year after year is another.

Third, the processing economics must remain competitive. Collecting nodules is only part of the equation. Extracting the metals they contain at attractive costs is equally important. To this end, the company's own model predicts a reasonable earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) profit margin of $254 per ton of nodules at steady state.

In short, investors should think of these as checkpoints. Each milestone completed reduces uncertainty and increases confidence in the long-term investment case.

So, could the stock become a millionaire-maker?

The answer depends entirely on whether The Metals Company can successfully pioneer deep-sea mining.

If the company secures the necessary approvals, proves its technology at commercial scale, and establishes itself as a reliable supplier of critical minerals, the upside could be substantial. First movers in entirely new industries often enjoy advantages that are difficult to replicate.

On the other hand, investors should recognize that this remains a highly speculative business. Regulatory uncertainty, environmental concerns, execution challenges, and commodity price cycles all represent meaningful risks.

For investors willing to accept that uncertainty, The Metals Company offers a ticket toward that million dollars.
