On August 13 local time, U.S. President Trump signed a proclamation, announcing ad valorem tariffs of 10% to 100% on imported drones and related components on national security grounds. Among them, tariffs reach up to 100% on drones with a maximum takeoff weight exceeding 25 kg and equipped with sensitive features such as thermal imaging, as well as related docking stations and key components; smaller drones and components without specific features are subject to a 25% rate.
Tariff rates also vary by country of origin: drones and components from the EU, Japan, South Korea, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein will face a 15% tariff, while related products from the UK will be subject to a 10% rate, provided their primary hardware, software, and technology originate from these regions and the U.S. For countries that have already reached trade agreements with the U.S., the rates specified in the respective agreements will apply.
The new tariffs will officially take effect 21 days after the proclamation is signed, while a 180-day grace period is provided for certain non-sensitive drone components. The U.S. aims to reduce its reliance on foreign drone supply chains and support the growth of its domestic industry.
The market is paying particular attention to the potential impact on Chinese manufacturers. China has long dominated the global drone manufacturing market, with Shenzhen-based DJI holding a share of around 70% in the U.S. commercial drone market last year.
