Choosing between a retail turnaround and a technological innovator requires a careful look at the numbers. You must decide whether Advance Auto Parts (NYSE:AAP) or Corning (NYSE:GLW) provides the better opportunity.

Advance Auto Parts is currently streamlining its operations to focus on core automotive retail efficiency. Corning remains a leader in materials science, providing critical glass and fiber optic components. Both companies are prominent in their fields, yet they offer very different risk and reward profiles for investors looking for growth or value in 2026.

The case for Advance Auto Parts

Advance Auto Parts operates as a major provider in the automotive aftermarket, serving both professional garages and everyday drivers. As a player among consumer discretionary stocks, the company focuses on its blended-box model to ensure parts are available for all customer types. Professional sales accounted for approximately 50% of total revenue in 2025, supported by a network of 19 distribution centers and 809 independently-owned Carquest branded stores.

In FY 2025, revenue reached nearly $8.6 billion, which represented a decrease of roughly 5.4% compared to the previous year. Despite the decline in sales, the company reported a net income of approximately $44.0 million. This resulted in a net margin of close to 0.5% for the year.

As of its January 2026 balance sheet, the debt-to-equity ratio was roughly 2.4x. This ratio is calculated by dividing total debt by shareholder equity, indicating the company relies on borrowed money for its operations. The current ratio, which measures the ability to cover short-term debts with current assets, was nearly 1.7x. Free cash flow for the period was a negative $298.0 million, representing cash from operations minus capital expenditures.

The case for Corning

Corning is a specialist in materials science with a business spanning five distinct reporting segments. These segments provide critical components to major companies like Nvidia, Meta Platforms, and Amazon. Recent developments indicate strengthened partnerships with these technology entities, which are driving demand for connectivity and optical products.

In FY 2025, revenue reached nearly $15.6 billion, marking an increase of approximately 19.1% year over year. The company successfully turned this growth into a net income of roughly $1.6 billion. This performance supported a net margin of close to 10.2%.

As of its December 2025 balance sheet, Corning maintained a debt-to-equity ratio of nearly 0.9x. This indicates a lower level of debt relative to equity compared to many peers. The current ratio stood at roughly 1.6x, indicating a solid ability to pay off near-term liabilities. Free cash flow for the year was approximately $1.4 billion, which is the cash remaining after the business pays for its capital investments.

Risk profile comparison

Advance Auto Parts faces challenges related to its recent restructuring and the potential for failure to realize efficiency gains. The company operates in a crowded field against giants like O'Reilly Automotive and AutoZone, who may expand more quickly or deploy superior technology. Additionally, its high level of indebtedness could limit its financial flexibility and cash flow availability for future operations or strategic investment needs.

Corning is highly sensitive to the health of its largest customers, as losing a key partner could significantly impact revenue. The company also deals with global supply chain risks and the need for constant, expensive innovation to avoid product obsolescence in competitive hardware markets. Finally, strict environmental regulations regarding greenhouse gas emissions may require substantial capital spending or lead to fines for non-compliance.

Valuation comparison

Advance Auto Parts offers a lower P/S ratio than Corning, while its Forward P/E reflects a different valuation of future earnings estimates.

Which stock would I buy in 2026?

I'd go with Corning, and it’s not a close call. Advance Auto Parts is a turnaround story that is showing early signs of life, with the most recent quarter delivering the strongest comparable sales growth in five years. Margins are expanding and management reaffirmed its full-year outlook. If you’re a patient investor willing to bet on a retail recovery, the progress is encouraging… though it pales in comparison to the extraordinary momentum happening at Corning right now.

Corning is outpacing nearly every commercial metric that matters. Optical communications sales surged in the most recent quarter, driven by massive demand for fiber and connectivity infrastructure inside AI data centers. Amazon and Nvidia both signed major multiyear supply agreements in Q2, giving the company exciting long-term revenue visibility that investors love to see. On top of that, earnings grew at double the rate of revenue, free cash flow was substantial, and the company laid out an ambitious long-term growth plan that targets sales more than doubling by the end of the decade.

Advance Auto Parts needs more time to prove its turnaround is durable. Corning is already delivering results that back up its ambitions, and it’s riding an AI infrastructure wave that’s just getting started.
