Apple Splurges $30 Billion. Reaches Largest-Ever U.S.-Made Agreement With Broadcom to Produce 15 Billion Domestic Chips

Source Tradingkey

TradingKey - On July 8 local time, Apple ( AAPL) officially announced a multi-year partnership agreement worth over $30 billion with semiconductor giant Broadcom ( AVGO ), representing the company's largest U.S. manufacturing investment commitment since its founding.

Under the agreement, Apple will procure more than $30 billion worth of U.S.-made chips from Broadcom over the next five years, directly driving the production of over 15 billion chips within the United States.

As a key part of the collaboration, Broadcom will invest $1.5 billion to expand and upgrade its manufacturing facility in Fort Collins, Colorado, focusing on the production of high-performance radio frequency components and wireless connectivity technology products.

Notably, Broadcom filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Monday, disclosing that the two parties have signed a new long-term agreement to develop and supply "custom ASIC chip products" for multiple generations of Apple products, with the partnership extending until 2031.

As application-specific integrated circuits designed for particular use cases, ASIC chips are currently widely used in AI computing power scenarios. This collaboration also highlights Apple's deep layout in the AI hardware sector.

Deepening Decades of Cooperation

This partnership marks a comprehensive upgrade of the decades-long relationship between Apple and Broadcom. While Broadcom has long been a supplier of core connectivity components to Apple, the new agreement pushes their collaboration into a new phase of custom chip R&D and domestic manufacturing.

Under the agreement, Broadcom will manufacture key components in the United States, including 5G communication chips, GPS positioning chips, and Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity chips. These products will be widely used across multiple Apple product lines, such as the iPhone, iPad, and Mac, serving as core components that guarantee device performance and connectivity experience.

Apple CEO Tim Cook stated that the components produced at the Fort Collins facility are "critical" for Apple devices to deliver the performance and connectivity experience users expect, and that this partnership will deepen Apple's commitment to American manufacturing and innovation.

Broadcom CEO Hock Tan pointed out that Apple's commitment will help Broadcom further expand its manufacturing footprint in the United States and strengthen their collaborative capabilities in technological innovation. Both parties stated that this partnership will fully leverage their respective technological advantages to bring a more advanced product experience to users.

The localization of supply chains is accelerating.

This partnership is the largest single project within Apple's "$430 billion, five-year US investment plan" announced in 2021 (originally referred to as the US investment plan), and also represents its largest investment commitment since the launch of its US manufacturing initiative.

Apple stated in its announcement that the company has been working with the US government and businesses across the country to help build a complete domestic semiconductor supply chain, and this announcement further advances that goal. Cook specifically thanked the Trump administration for its support of the project, a partnership that clearly aligns with the US government's policy direction of promoting manufacturing reshoring.

In recent years, Apple has continued to step up its diversification and localization of the supply chain, and this deep collaboration with Broadcom is a key reflection of this strategy.

With the rapid growth in demand for AI, smart terminals, and high-performance connectivity technologies, tech giants are accelerating the reshaping of the global semiconductor industry landscape through long-term orders and heavy capital investments.

Apple stated that this partnership will drive the improvement of the domestic semiconductor supply chain in the US and help build an end-to-end domestic chip manufacturing system. It will not only create hundreds of US jobs but also boost domestic semiconductor manufacturing capacity, which is of great significance to the development of the US tech industry.

Bitcoin briefly loses 2025 gains as crypto plunges over the weekend.Bitcoin experienced a sharp decline this weekend, briefly erasing its 2025 gains and dipping below its year-opening value of $93,507. The cryptocurrency fell to a low of $93,029 on Sunday, representing a 25% drop from its all-time high in October. Although it has rebounded slightly to around $94,209, the pressures on the market remain significant. The downturn occurred despite the reopening of the U.S. government on Thursday, which many had hoped would provide essential support for crypto markets. This year initially appeared promising for cryptocurrencies, particularly after the inauguration of President Donald Trump, who has established the most pro-crypto administration thus far. However, ongoing political tensions—including Trump's tariff strategies and the recent government shutdown, lasting a historic 43 days—have contributed to several rapid price pullbacks for Bitcoin throughout the year. Market dynamics are also being influenced by Bitcoin whales—investors holding large amounts of Bitcoin—who have been offloading portions of their assets, consequently stalling price rallies even as positive regulatory developments emerge. Despite these sell-offs, analysts from Glassnode argue that this behavior aligns with typical patterns seen among long-term investors during the concluding stages of bull markets, suggesting it is not indicative of a mass exodus. Notably, Bitcoin is not alone in its struggles, as Ethereum and Solana have also recorded declines of 7.95% and 28.3%, respectively, since the start of the year, while numerous altcoins have faced even steeper losses. Looking ahead, questions linger regarding the viability of the four-year cycle thesis, particularly given the increasing institutional support and regulatory frameworks now in place in the crypto landscape. Matt Hougan, chief investment officer at Bitwise, remains optimistic, suggesting a potential Bitcoin resurgence in 2026 driven by the “debasement trade” thesis and a broader trend toward increased adoption of stablecoins, tokenization, and decentralized finance. Hougan emphasized the soundness of the underlying fundamentals, pointing to a positive outlook for the sector in the longer term.
