Web3 security tool Harpie announced the immediate shutdown of services

Harpie will shut down its services immediately, citing the lack of a robust business model. The Web3 security tool was an on-chain firewall project offering tools against exploits.

Harpie, the Web3 tool against exploits, announced it would shut down services immediately. The product protected wallets from malicious interactions as Web3 wallets suffered increasingly sophisticated attacks.

Harpie shut down access to its site with a message on discontinuing its operations.

We attempted to create a theft-free crypto ecosystem, but unfortunately could not create a sustainable business model around it. We hope that we created an impact and inspired new companies to take that torch and solve this tough problem,” explained the project’s team.

Harpie offered an on-chain firewall to prevent scams and theft. The service monitored transactions for potential attack vectors and moved funds away to safety before they reach the attacker’s wallet.

The project’s shutdown surprised the community, as Harpie was seen as potentially one of the most useful projects for Web3.

Previously, Safe Wallet offered similar services to screen out bad addresses but proved insufficient in the case of the Bybit hack.

Users urged to remove Harpie from all Web3 wallets

Former users of Harpie may see their transactions failing. The team warned users to disconnect their wallet from the service manually. In the coming days, the Web3 security tool will also put a withdrawal service on its website for any remaining vaulted assets. Influencers that have promoted the service on social media are now warning their audience to remove the tool from any Web3 wallets.

The rapid shutdown of Harpie caught the crypto community by surprise, as the project was active with promotion and its airdrop seasons until the last. Harpie was in the middle of a point farming period, where users scanned their wallets for threats. The project also ran an influencer campaign and a referral program.

Before finally shutting down, Harpie will distribute all airdrop awards and bonuses from its referral program. It is a tokenless protocol, so no assets were affected by the shutdown.

Harpie launched during the 2022 bear market, aiming to offer utility for Web3 services. The project managed to raise $4.5M, with backing from Coinbase Ventures, Dragonfly Capital, and Opensea Ventures.

After the shutdown, the space is looking at alternative tools for wallet protection. Those include GoPlus Security and Kerberus Sentinel3. Former Harpie users claim the app flagged a wider list of threats, which not even the OKX Web3 wallet and Rabby could intercept.

There is still demand for wallet protection, as heists target individual addresses with malicious links. Blacklisting and warnings are key for preventing Web3 scams and phishing.

Crypto projects also face extinction

Harpie’s removal coincides with two more projects wrapping up their activity. Vite Labs and Linear Finance announced they would also abandon support and shut down services after their assets were delisted from Binance.

These service shutdowns happen at a time when some projects continue to persist despite having no viable product. Meanwhile, a handful of previously hot products have completely stopped operating. Those include multiple Web3 games and SocialFi products like Friend.tech. Several NFT markets also did not survive the 2022-2023 bearish period.

Just days ago, the Moccosi NFT project also announced it is shutting down due to insufficient user interest. However, the Harpie service was widely used and applicable, as users were still mining points in the last few days.
