Australian Dollar stalls corrective slide from monthly high amid hawkish RBA and weak USD

Source Fxstreet
  • AUD/USD pulls back after touching a fresh monthly high, though it lacks follow-through.
  • Middle East jitters weigh on investors’ sentiment and undermine the risk-sensitive Aussie.
  • Falling bond yields drag the USD to a three-week low, limiting losses amid a hawkish RBA.

The AUD/USD pair retreats after hitting a fresh monthly high on Thursday, snapping a four-day winning streak and stalling its recent goodish recovery from sub-0.6900 levels, or the lowest since early July. Spot prices, however, lack follow-through and manage to hold above the 0.7000 psychological mark through the first half of the European session.

Fears of a further escalation of tensions in the Middle East weigh on investors' sentiment, which, in turn, prompts some selling around the risk-sensitive Australian Dollar (AUD). However, the recent hawkish comments from Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) officials, along with the US Dollar (USD) selling bias, act as a tailwind for the AUD/USD pair and help limit further losses.

In fact, RBA Assistant Governor Christopher Kent said on Monday that there are reasonable indications that neutral interest rates are increasing both domestically and globally. Furthermore, RBA Deputy Governor Andrew Hauser warned earlier today that Q3 trimmed-mean inflation may run hotter than expected, keeping rate hike expectations alive ahead of the November 3 policy meeting.

Moreover, China's better-than-expected Q3 GDP print turns out to be another factor acting as a tailwind for the Aussie. The USD, on the other hand, extends its recent pullback from an 18-month peak and touches a fresh three-week trough as US Federal Reserve (Fed) officials recently signaled that there is no urgency to raise interest rates at the upcoming October 27–28 meeting.

Furthermore, US bond yields extend their retracement slide from multi-year highs, which keeps USD bulls on the back foot and offers some support to the AUD/USD pair. Meanwhile, USD bears might refrain from placing aggressive bets and opt to wait for more cues about the Fed's policy path. Hence, the focus will be on the outcome of a two-day FOMC meeting, starting Tuesday.

Dollar presses 102 as the 10-year yield sits at 5.14% — and October hike odds are only 17%The dollar index closed at 101.99 (+0.20%) on Monday after briefly topping 102.07, while the 10-year Treasury yield rose to 5.14% and the 2-year hit 4.774% — yet futures price only about a 17% chance of a hike at the October 27-28 FOMC, versus roughly 90% for December. The driver is a global bond selloff, not a Fed repricing: France's 10-year OAT jumped to 4.84% ~ 4.94% and the OAT-Bund spread widened to 140 ~ 146bp. Here are the levels, the cross-asset read-through and what to watch.
