Diversified insurance agency Brown & Brown's (NYSE:BRO) stock wasn't exactly a hot item on Tuesday. The company published a quarterly earnings report that missed analyst top- and bottom-line estimates and was punished by a broad investor sell-off. Its equity closed the day down by almost 5%.

Growth in challenging times

Brown & Brown unveiled its third-quarter figures after market close on Monday. These were topped by a revenue line of almost $1.73 billion, a more than 7% improvement over the same period of 2025. It didn't quite reach the average analyst estimate of $1.76 billion, however.

Missed AI’s "Act 1"? Act 2 Could Be 15x Bigger. Most investors think they missed the AI boat because they didn't buy Nvidia in 2005. But according to our analysts, we’re only at the end of "Act 1"—the R&D phase. "Act 2" is the global rollout. Continue »

The dynamic was similar for net income. Under GAAP standards, it rose by almost 6% to $240 million. On a non-GAAP (adjusted), per-share basis, bottom-line profitability inched up by nearly 2% to $1.07. Again, though, that was under the analyst consensus estimate ($1.09).

In its earnings release, Brown & Brown referenced the "challenging rate environment" of softening insurance premium prices. It said that the addition of teammates from insurance broker Accession Risk Management Group, a 2025 acquisition, helped lift the company's fundamentals.

Organic revenue tells a truer tale

Accession was a $9.8 billion purchase for Brown & Brown, and since its results were recently folded into its parent’s, it’s distorting the company’s performance a bit. A revealing metric for Brown & Brown is organic revenue, which excludes the contribution from acquired businesses, among other items. This crawled barely over 1% higher year over year, to $1.46 billion, reflecting the struggles of the company's legacy business.

There's only so much help an acquisition can provide if a company’s core isn’t delivering impressive growth. To regain Mr. Market's favor, Brown & Brown will likely have to crank its organic revenue growth engine higher.
