TradingKey - Moderna (NASDAQ: MRNA) closed the day at $200.10 on Friday, October 23, losing 1.25%, after a sharp selloff on Thursday. However premarket trading points further down at $189.15 level this morning. On October 22, the stock dropped as much as 26% intraday following a partial results from its personalized melanoma vaccine with Merck leaked online. But it then closed the day down 17.57% at $202.63. Over previous two sessions, shares lost about 19% from Wednesday's $245.81 close.
The data itself was green, but Moderna was up more than 500% this year before the drop. It’s mostly on hopes for this one program, so the bar was set very high.
On the data front, partial findings pop up on a medical news website around midday on October 22 and were taken down shortly afterwards. At around 2:11 p.m. ET, ESMO, the European cancer society hosted the congress where the findings were scheduled but it’s stated that the embargo had been breached and lifted it. Eventually, companies delivered the full figures. Merck, which shares the program, closed down just around 1.3%.
In addition to this, the INTerpath-001 trial tested intismeran autogene. It’s a vaccine built from each patient's own tumor mutations. That, combined with Merck's Keytruda versus Keytruda alone in 1,137 patients with surgically removed stage IIB to IV melanoma.
This combination eliminates the potential risk of reappearing or death by around 42%. It’s with a hazard ratio of 0.58 which means the risk was 58% of that on Keytruda alone.
Overall 82.2% of patients on the combination were free of recurrence just in about after two years as compared to 70.0% on Keytruda alone. The risk of distant spread or death dropped by 38%. After the six-month vaccine course, a pre-specified analysis indicated a 58% cut in recurrence risk. Overall survival is not yet mature but signals a favorable trend, and no new safety signals appeared. The findings have been approved by The New England Journal of Medicine.
ESMO Scientific Co-Chair James Larkin, which wasn’t involved in the study, stated "the reduction in risk of relapse is clinically significant."
Investors had anchored on the earlier Phase 2b study, which showed a 49% reduction in recurrence risk. The Phase 3 result of 42% is strong but smaller, and RBC, cited by BioSpace, said it fell at the low end of investor expectations. UBS called it "overall a strong data set" and said it boosts confidence in upcoming kidney and bladder cancer studies. RBC said the data looks clinically meaningful and likely approvable.
Clinicians and the market read the same numbers differently. Doctors saw a major advance, but investors had already paid for one.
Moderna rallied from a 52-week low of $22.28 to a high of $254.48, driven largely by this program, while all of its approved products today are infectious disease vaccines. Analyst targets still sit far below the share price. The consensus rating is Hold, with average targets of about $104 to $138 depending on the provider. Goldman Sachs raised its target to $137 from $120 with a Neutral rating, and Rothschild & Co Redburn has a Sell rating with an $81 target.
Merck and Moderna said they are engaging with regulators, and the next company catalyst is Moderna's Q3 report on Friday, November 6. Investors will look for cash use and launch plans for a vaccine made one patient at a time. Mature overall survival data would be the next major test.
That reset in expectations shows on the daily chart, where MRNA has pulled back sharply from the $254.63 peak to the $181.36 support zone, a level where buyers have stepped in before. That area lines up with the 38.2% Fibonacci retracement, meaning the stock has given back 38.2% of its rally, and with the rising trendline, a line drawn under the higher lows, that has guided the move since August. Thursday's low of $180.80 dipped just below it, but buyers pushed price well back above by the close. The bigger uptrend is still intact, since price remains above both moving averages, which track the average price over a set period, at $173.13 and $135.20.
RSI, a momentum gauge that runs from 0 to 100, has cooled to about 50, its neutral midpoint, after the sharp drop.

MRNA Price Chart - Source: Tradingview
The premarket quote near $189.15 puts that support back in play today. A daily close below $181.36 would break the trendline and open $173.13, then $158.85. For buyers, a daily close above $209.59 would point to a recovery toward $234.13.
I lean cautiously bullish while MRNA holds above $181.36.
The Phase 3 trial cut the risk of melanoma recurrence or death by 42%, but that was below the 49% seen in the earlier Phase 2b study, and the stock had already risen more than 500% this year on hopes for the program.
The bias is cautiously bullish above $181.36. A daily close above $209.59 targets $234.13, while a close below $181.36 opens $173.13 and $158.85.
Moderna's cancer vaccine worked, but the stock had priced in more, and analyst targets remain far below the share price. The level that matters is $181.36, where the 38.2% retracement meets the August trendline. In my view, holding it keeps the uptrend alive, while a daily close below it would open $173.13 and turn the outlook bearish.
