Archer Aviation (NYSE: ACHR) is one of the leading companies in the electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft market. The aerospace and defense technology company's goal is to reduce urban gridlock with 10- to 15-minute aerial trips.

Some analysts love Archer Aviation. While the stock is down nearly 50% so far this year, the average analysts' price target for the stock is $10.89, roughly $7 a share more than it is trading for now.

Archer's positive side is its commercial relationships with carmaker Stellantis and United Airlines . There's also potential in some recently acquired Boeing subsidiaries: drone maker Insitu, eVTOL maker Wisk Aero, and SkyGrid, which makes software infrastructure and a digital air traffic management system.

However, closer examination reveals reasons for investors to be wary of Archer. Here are three of them.

Delays are grounding its eVTOL plans

Archer Aviation faces ongoing Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification delays for its Midnight eVTOL, which hasn't yet been approved for full-scale commercial passenger operations.

The urban air mobility market relies entirely on complex, multistage FAA certifications subject to strict safety standards and prone to unexpected delays. Commercial launch timelines can easily slip due to regulatory bottlenecks, supply chain constraints, or delays in building out vertiport infrastructure. Any setback to flight testing or certification milestones directly increases the risk of cash burn.

The company is also embroiled in a patent infringement lawsuit with Vertical Aerospace. Archer claimed that Vertical's Valo eVTOL was too similar in appearance and technology to Archer's Midnight. On Oct. 6, Vertical countersued, saying that Archer's patents were invalid and that Archer had copied its Midnight propulsion system from Vertical.

It is a long way from being profitable

Archer remains pre-revenue on its core eVTOL air taxi business while burning substantial capital to fund research, manufacturing, and flight testing.

To stay capitalized, the company frequently issues shares or relies on stock-funded transactions, resulting in significant share dilution over time that reduces the upside potential for existing retail shareholders.

In the second quarter, Archer reported $5 million in revenue, compared to none in the same period a year ago. However, its losses also grew to $284.2 million, up from a $206 net income loss in the second quarter of 2025.

The eVTOL market is getting crowded

Archer is locked in a tight race against well-funded rivals such as Joby Aviation, as well as major legacy aerospace incumbents and international competitors such as EHang in China. Joby had a head start over Archer in FAA test flights, and EHang has already received approval in China.

Even if Archer achieves aircraft certification, creating a profitable, high-frequency, safe commercial air taxi network will require navigating urban zoning, noise restrictions, and public adoption.

In short, Archer could certainly succeed in the long run, but there are too many risks attached to the company for Archer stock to be a worthwhile investment.
