On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 22, 2026, United Rentals (NYSE:URI) reported record total revenue of $4.9 billion and raised its full-year financial guidance. High demand across non-residential construction and industrial projects continues to fuel long-term expansion for equipment rental providers. Three things management said stand out.

1. Specialty Rental Growth Outpaces General Equipment Demand

Specialty rental segment offerings, which include specialized equipment solutions such as trench safety and fluid management, yield higher margins than traditional fleet rentals. Management continues to aggressively expand these high-return categories by opening 40 cold starts, or brand-new branch locations built from scratch, through the first nine months of the year.

Specialty was a standout with rental revenue growth of 35% year-over-year, including 12 cold starts, which brings us to 40 cold starts year-to-date. Notably, each specialty line of business reported strong double-digit growth in the quarter.
-- Matt Flannery, President and Chief Executive Officer

2. Operational Discipline Drives Efficiency Across Core Cost Centers

Controlling overhead and field logistics is essential when a company absorbs industrywide cost inflation. Management expanded operational efficiency across labor absorption, delivery logistics, and R&M (repair and maintenance) expenses to support core profitability.

Certainly we have gotten very good labor absorption, and you can see that in both sides of the businesses, and you mentioned R&M, but almost back to Rob's question, I think the team has also done an extraordinary job on the delivery side.
-- Ted Grace, Chief Financial Officer

3. Mega-Project Activity Supports Raised Full-Year Capital Spending

Multiyear construction projects in data centers, energy, and infrastructure provide steady long-term demand for heavy machinery. That persistent customer activity prompted management to increase its full-year gross capex, or capital expenditures spent purchasing physical equipment, to over $5.3 billion.

Large projects across a variety of end markets are driving our growth, and we expect this momentum will carry for the remainder of this year and into next year.
-- Matt Flannery, President and Chief Executive Officer

Looking Ahead

Large infrastructure, energy, and data center projects continue to accelerate across North America, and management is not hiding its satisfaction with the momentum entering 2027. Scale, broad fleet availability, and digital management tools give the company structural advantages as it prioritizes pricing discipline and capital efficiency.

The demand environment for large projects remains robust, supporting our revised guidance, which reflects over 12% total revenue growth, with EBITDA margins over 46%, all at the midpoint.
-- Matt Flannery, President and Chief Executive Officer

Combining general-rent, or standard job-site machinery like boom lifts, with specialized job-site solutions creates a durable operational moat. That multi-product offering allows United Rentals to capture market share on complex construction sites and convert high fleet utilization into long-term shareholder value.

By layering on technology, innovation, and unmatched service across both our specialty and gen rent businesses, we support our customers' productivity and drive a better partnership.
-- Matt Flannery, President and Chief Executive Officer
