On its third quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 21, 2026, IBM (NYSE:IBM) announced revenue growth of 6%, led by software growth of 9%. Accelerated expansion across software and mainframe platforms shows how enterprise technology modernization produces recurring cash flow. Three takeaways stand out for long-term investors.

1. Transaction Processing Rebound Validates Mainframe Demand

Software revenue accelerated as clients expanded core workloads on mission-critical platforms. Management explained that second-quarter softness in Transaction Processing, the software segment handling core mainframe operations, resulted from deal timing rather than customer defections.

Transaction processing grew 10%, underscoring the strategic importance of the mainframe and validating our view that the softness we saw in the second quarter reflected timing rather than underlying demand.
-- Arvind Krishna, Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer

2. Security Offering Lightwell Builds a $700 Million Pipeline

Enterprise software security represents an expanding market as businesses move to protect open-source code. Management made Lightwell, the company's open-source software security management tool, generally available and quickly built a substantial sales backlog.

Lightwell was recently made generally available, and we have strong early demand with a pipeline that is already approaching $700 million.
-- Jim Kavanaugh, Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

3. Productivity Execution Drives Cash Generation

Structural cost discipline across corporate operations is pushing profit margins higher. Operational efficiencies boosted adjusted earnings before EBITDA, or earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization, which fueled free cash flow growth over the first nine months of the year.

Through the first nine months of the year, we generated about $8 billion of free cash flow, up about $600 million year over year, driven by about $1 billion increase in Adjusted EBITDA, offset by higher CapEx, cash taxes, and net interest expense.
-- Jim Kavanaugh, Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

Looking Ahead

Software acceleration and recurring contracts are propelling the business, and management isn't hiding its satisfaction. Structural advantages in mainframe architecture and hybrid cloud infrastructure position the company to capture long-term workload growth while management tracks software execution and operational productivity.

Our results reinforce our confidence in delivering revenue growth for 2026 in a range of 4%-5% and enable us to raise our year-over-year free cash flow growth expectation to more than $1 billion.
-- Arvind Krishna, Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer

Productivity initiatives continue expanding margins as artificial intelligence adoption accelerates across enterprise workflows.

Our portfolio strength, disciplined execution, and relentless focus on productivity reinforce my confidence in our trajectory.
-- Arvind Krishna, Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer
