As cloud computing and public safety technology evolve, investors are weighing high-growth infrastructure against defensive software ecosystems. Choosing between Arista Networks (NYSE:ANET) and Axon Enterprise (NASDAQ:AXON) requires balancing different risk profiles.

Arista provides high-speed networking equipment that powers modern data centers, while Axon dominates the law enforcement technology market through Taser devices and software. Both companies benefit from secular trends in automation and digitization, making them compelling candidates for growth-oriented portfolios looking for market leaders in their respective categories.

The case for Arista Networks

Arista Networks is a prominent player among tech stocks that design high-performance networking platforms for large-scale data centers. Its solutions are vital for artificial intelligence workloads that require massive bandwidth and low latency. The company primarily serves cloud titans and specialty providers. In its latest annual report, filed for 2025, customer concentration remained a key factor. Two major end customers accounted for 16% and 26% of revenue, respectively. Customer concentration like this adds a layer of risk to the business if spending patterns shift.

In 2025, revenue reached $9 billion, representing approximately 29% year-over-year growth. The ongoing build-out of infrastructure for generative artificial intelligence drove this expansion. The company reported net income of roughly $3.5 billion for the period. Its net margin, which measures how much profit is retained from every dollar of sales, was close to 39%.

As of its December 2025 balance sheet, the current ratio stands at approximately 3.0x. This metric indicates the company has $3 in current assets for every $1 in short-term liabilities, suggesting strong liquidity. The debt-to-equity ratio is 0.0x, indicating the company has no debt relative to shareholders' equity. Free cash flow, which is cash from operations minus capital expenditures, was roughly $4.3 billion.

The case for Axon Enterprise

Axon Enterprise specializes in hardware and cloud-based software for public safety agencies. Its ecosystem includes Taser energy devices, body-worn cameras, and digital evidence management systems. Unlike its peer, Axon has a diverse customer base, with no single customer accounting for more than 10% of net sales in 2025. The company is increasingly focused on its software-as-a-service offerings, which provide recurring revenue streams from law enforcement and federal agencies.

In 2025, revenue reached close to $2.8 billion, a significant 33.5% increase over the prior year. This growth highlights the increasing adoption of cloud software and next-generation safety devices. However, the company reported net income of approximately $125 million, resulting in a net margin of roughly 4.5%. This lower net margin reflects heavy investments in research and development to stay ahead of technological shifts.

According to its December 2025 balance sheet, the debt-to-equity ratio is approximately 0.6x. This indicates that total debt is 60% of shareholders' equity. The current ratio, a measure of a company's ability to pay short-term debts, is roughly 2.5x.

Free cash flow was approximately $75 million. Note that stock-based compensation represented roughly 300% of operating cash flow, meaning this non-cash add-back heavily inflates reported cash generation.

Risk profile comparison

Arista Networks faces revenue concentration risk, as a few large cloud and AI customers drive a significant share of its sales. The company also relies heavily on Broadcom for switching chips, making it vulnerable to supply chain disruptions. Competitive pressure from Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Extreme Networks creates persistent pricing pressure. Furthermore, geopolitical tensions and trade controls concerning China affect its global manufacturing operations and costs.

Axon Enterprise is dependent on law enforcement budgets, which can be affected by political shifts or economic constraints. The company also faces persistent risks from product liability and legal claims related to the use of its Taser devices. Rapid technological change requires constant innovation in AI and machine learning, which carries high research costs. Additionally, the company reported a material weakness in internal control over financial reporting as of Dec. 31, 2025, related to revenue recognition.

Valuation comparison

Investors must choose between Arista Networks, which trades at a lower Forward P/E, and Axon Enterprise, which has a significantly lower P/S ratio.

Which stock would I buy in 2026?

Arista and Axon are both quality growth stocks to consider for the long term, but Axon is the stock I would buy right now. This is after the stock has fallen over 50% from its 2025 all-time high, providing an attractive entry point to invest in this dominant technology provider for law enforcement.

Arista is consistently posting high-double-digit revenue growth and will likely continue to do so, given the strong tailwinds in AI infrastructure spending. But Axon is posting equally impressive growth, as it pivots to providing AI-powered software. The company reported seeing robust demand last quarter, with 70% year-over-year growth in its software business.

Arista is generating higher margins, but this is largely priced into the stock's valuation. Analysts expect Arista's earnings to grow at an annualized rate of about 18% in the coming years. Its forward P/E of 44 puts the PEG ratio at over 2x.

Axon is expected to deliver 39% annualized earnings growth, with the stock trading at a forward P/E of about 53x, as of Oct. 20, 2026. That's a more attractive PEG multiple of 1.36x.

These are both solid growth stocks, but Axon is potentially the more undervalued, making it the one I would buy now.
