Indonesian Rupiah strengthens against US Dollar as safe-haven demand shifts

Source Fxstreet
  • USD/IDR gains as the US Dollar weakens amid growing doubts over AI trade sustainability.
  • High oil prices, El Niño food inflation, and classification clash worries support USD/IDR downside restraint.
  • OJK issued 2.1 trillion rupiah in fines following MSCI demotion warnings over coordinated stock trading concerns.

USD/IDR inches lower after two days of gains, trading around 18,110 during Asian hours on Friday. The pair depreciates as the US Dollar (USD) struggles amid mounting doubts regarding the sustainability of the AI trade. Investor confidence weakened after quarterly US earnings reports from several megacap technology companies failed to meet expectations.

Meanwhile, escalating geopolitical conflict in the Middle East has driven broader market risk aversion. Reports indicating that the US and Israel are preparing additional military strikes against Iran following the upcoming midterm elections have intensified safe-haven demand, bolstering both the Japanese Yen and Swiss Franc against the Greenback.

Meanwhile, Federal Reserve (Fed) officials have indicated little urgency to accelerate policy tightening. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh recently expressed optimism regarding the underlying strength of the US economy but refrained from signaling whether additional interest rate hikes would be required. Despite this measured guidance, market participants utilizing the CME FedWatch Tool currently price in a 92.8% probability of a rate pause at the upcoming October 27–28 policy meeting.

The downside of the USD/IDR pair could be restrained as the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) faces multiple domestic challenges. Higher global oil prices have heightened fiscal concerns, while a steeper rise in food costs linked to El Niño continues to sustain underlying inflationary pressures. Investor sentiment was further dampened by President Prabowo Subianto's sharp criticism of MSCI’s proposed changes to Indonesia’s market classification, which has deepened worries regarding potential foreign capital outflows.

In response to regulatory concerns, Indonesia's financial regulator, the OJK, has handed over sanction letters to parties found guilty of violating trading rules across three listed companies, imposing penalties totaling 2.1 trillion rupiah ($116.67 million) late on Wednesday. OJK highlighted these penalties as a key part of broader capital market reforms following warnings from MSCI that it could demote Indonesian equities from "emerging" to "standalone" market status if sufficient action was not taken to combat coordinated stock trading practices.

Rupiah support highlights BI’s preference for targeted stabilisation over rate hikes

DBS Group Research’s Philip Wee points out that Bank Indonesia’s recent actions in the FX market have been central to its current policy stance. According to DBS, “together with continued intervention in spot and forward FX markets, these measures underscored BI’s preference for targeted currency stabilisation over outright monetary tightening from MSCI-led market volatility.” This approach, in their view, reflects a deliberate choice to lean on FX operations and targeted tools rather than resorting immediately to higher policy rates in response to index-related market pressures.

Indonesian Rupiah FAQs

The Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) is sensitive to a dynamic mix of global market conditions, domestic economic fundamentals, commodity price shifts, and proactive central bank interventions. As an emerging market currency, the Rupiah’s trajectory depends heavily on both domestic resilience and international economic momentum.

Bank Indonesia (BI) plays a central role in stabilizing the Rupiah through strategic monetary policy and direct market operations. By adjusting benchmark interest rates, the central bank manages yield differentials against major global central banks like the US Federal Reserve to attract and retain foreign portfolio investments. BI also utilizes a "triple-intervention" framework—operating across spot, derivative (DNDF), and government bond markets- to smooth out currency volatility, complemented by monetary instruments like Sekuritas Rupiah Bank Indonesia (SRBI) to bolster capital inflows.

From a broader macroeconomic perspective, domestic inflation rates, trade performance, and overall fiscal health dictate the IDR's underlying strength. Indonesia's trade and current account balances are closely tied to these fundamentals, while broader global factors, such as risk-on or risk-off sentiment among international investors and global liquidity trends, directly affect exchange rate movements.

As a major exporter of commodities such as palm oil, coal, nickel, and natural gas, Indonesia benefits from higher global commodity prices, which generate trade surpluses, increase foreign currency inflows, and strengthen the Rupiah. However, because Indonesia is also a net importer of crude oil, elevated global oil prices increase the foreign exchange burden, widening the current account deficit and weighing on the currency's value.
