On its third quarter of 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 16, 2026, Simmons First (NASDAQ:SFNC) detailed a strategic pivot away from chasing low-margin loan volume toward prioritizing higher profitability and disciplined balance sheet management. The regional bank is willingly letting low-yielding credit portfolios run off to protect spreads and build capital flexibility. Three things management said stand out.

1. Simmons First Refuses to Sacrifice Underwriting Standards for Pure Loan Volume

Management is letting low-yielding loans run off rather than accepting compressed risk spreads in a competitive market. The bank saw over $1 billion in paydowns among large single-product loans that offered little deposit business, choosing to recycle capital into higher-return assets.

But what I would also say is we are not going to dilute our standards along the way in doing that just to solve for the v side of the equation. The volume side of the equation.
-- Jay Brogdon, President and Chief Executive Officer

2. Structural Cost Cuts Are Funding Reinvestment in Wealth Management and Commercial Banking

The company announced plans to close 26 branches to optimize its footprint without exiting core markets. Management is redirecting structural expense savings into hiring talent in commercial and industrial lending, alongside tech-enabled deposit campaigns.

And as I think about where we are today and what is left in the fourth quarter, we have a real shot to kind of be flat to maybe even slightly down depending on how the fourth quarter shapes up.
-- Daniel Hobbs, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

3. Balance Sheet Deleveraging and Core Deposit Repricing Expand Net Interest Margins

Net interest margin, the profit spread between interest earned on loans and paid on deposits, expanded 8 basis points to 3.92%. Replacing expensive brokered deposits, which are high-cost funds gathered through third-party brokers, with Federal Home Loan Bank advances helped lower overall funding costs.

As we look at 8 basis point growth, linked quarter, about half of that was from deleveraging, and about half of that was kind of core, you know, strategy around profitability, all the back book repricing, and all of those things.
-- Daniel Hobbs, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

Looking Ahead

Net interest margin expansion is gaining momentum, and executive leadership sees room for further profitability gains. Management is watching deposit pricing discipline and commercial lending expansion, relying on a leaner branch network and lower funding costs to drive returns.

And, you know, our margins that sits today at 3.92, which is a very strong margin. We feel like that margin has meaningful upside.
-- Daniel Hobbs, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

The bank is using its improving return metrics to build capital flexibility while shedding single-product credit relationships that fail to meet internal profitability thresholds.

I could not be more proud of how we have been tackling some very difficult decisions head on in our business and we are producing results that indicate real progress toward our goals.
-- Jay Brogdon, President and Chief Executive Officer
