On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 16, 2026, Independent Bank (NASDAQ:INDB) reported net income of $89.7 million and diluted earnings per share, or net income per common share, of $1.90. Long-term investors should care because disciplined expense management and systematic balance sheet repricing continue to protect profitability amid a shifting-interest rate environment. Three things management said stand out.

1. Core Systems Upgrade Delayed to February to Protect Customer Experience

Independent Bank postponed its planned core software migration from October to February 2027 to ensure full operational readiness. The shift adds $1.5 million to $2 million in one-time consulting expenses through the fourth quarter, but management prioritized execution quality over schedule.

Of note, we have elected to move the timing of our planned systems upgrade from October to February to allow for additional preparation and ensure a smooth, well-managed implementation.
-- Jeffrey Tengel, President and Chief Executive Officer

2. Fixed-Rate Asset Repricing Creates Structural Tailwinds for Profit Margin

Over $500 million in lower-yielding securities mature over the next four to five quarters, releasing funds that can reprice near 6%. That shift expands net interest margin, the difference between interest earned on loans and paid on deposits, toward 4% even without Federal Reserve rate moves.

Assuming we can equalize any Fed action with loan yields and deposit costs, that back book repricing would still drive some pretty good margin expansion over the next four or five quarters.
-- Mark J. Ruggiero, Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice President of Consumer Lending

3. Capital Strategy Focuses on Aggressive Share Repurchases From Profits

Management returned excess capital to owners by repurchasing stock while maintaining regulatory capital cushions. Independent Bank intends to return 100% of profits to shareholders through dividends and buybacks.

During the third quarter, we repurchased $57.4 million in capital, executing on our long-term goal of prudently returning excess capital to shareholders.
-- Mark J. Ruggiero, Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice President of Consumer Lending

Looking Ahead

Commercial loan pipelines reached $574 million heading into the fourth quarter, and management isn't hiding its satisfaction with the expansion of relationship banking across New England. The bank relies on deep customer relationships and deposit funding to grow without sacrificing underwriting standards.

As the environment continues to shift, we recognize the best use of our capital is to build deep, profitable customer relationships and not grow our balance sheet at thin, risk-adjusted spreads.
-- Jeffrey Tengel, President and Chief Executive Officer

Management keeps its focus on operating leverage as it consolidates office space and upgrades technology.

Our strategy remains straightforward: drive organic growth through new and existing relationships, maintain disciplined underwriting, generate positive operating leverage, and deploy our strong capital position to create long-term shareholder value.
-- Jeffrey Tengel, President and Chief Executive Officer
