On Oct. 14, the Social Security Administration announced some major updates for 2027. And the news that hogged the spotlight was the 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment, or COLA, that will be applied to benefits in January.

A 3.6% COLA wasn't the only piece of good news, though. Social Security's earnings test limits, which apply to beneficiaries who work prior to full retirement age, are increasing in 2027. This means some seniors will be able to earn more money from a job before it negatively impacts their benefits.

But while there was plenty of positive news on the Social Security front earlier this week, there was also one piece of bad news to emerge. And while it won't impact everyone, higher earners won't be happy.

Social Security's wage cap is increasing

Social Security gets most of its funding from payroll taxes. Workers pay into the program at a rate of 6.2%, and their employers match that same rate. Self-employed people pay Social Security taxes at a rate of 12.4% because they don't have an employer to split the bill with.

Each year, a wage cap is set that determines how much earnings are taxed to fund Social Security. In 2026, the wage cap is $184,500. In 2027, it's rising to $192,300. This means people who earn $192,300 or more will owe Social Security taxes on an additional $7,800 of wages.

For those who have an employer, that increase results in an additional $483.60 in taxes. For those who are self-employed, the additional tax burden is $967.20.

A wage cap increase is a good thing for Social Security

People who will now have to pay more taxes on their wages to fund Social Security in 2027 may not be happy about it. But an increase in the wage cap is an inherently good thing for Social Security, since the program relies on payroll tax revenue to stay afloat.

Furthermore, Social Security is facing the possibility of benefit cuts in the coming years if lawmakers don't find a way to shore up the program's finances. So while higher earners may be annoyed about a higher wage cap, it's a change that's unequivocally helping Social Security stay afloat.

Of course, it's important to recognize that higher Social Security taxes are a blow for some workers. In parts of the country where a starter home costs more than $1 million, a salary of $192,300 isn't particularly high. So for people in that boat, the added Social Security taxes could be a problem.

Unfortunately, those taxes aren't determined by local living costs. The wage cap applies universally, and anyone whose salary is over $184,500 will inevitably have to pay more in 2027.
