On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 15, 2026, J.B. Hunt (NASDAQ:JBHT) outlined plans to raise contractual rates to offset rising operational expenses. Shipping demand is picking up, but higher driver pay and medical costs are pressuring profit margins. Long-term shareholder value depends on the carrier's ability to enforce higher rates at contract renewals. Three things management said stand out.

1. Shift From Spot Rates to Contractual Price Adjustments

Management is pivoting from adjusting short-term spot rates (prices set for individual shipments) in transactional brokerage to raising prices on multiyear freight contracts. This pricing shift is essential to cover persistent driver wages and operating cost inflation across all business units.

While working with customers to create differentiated value, we also believe the industry is entering a new phase of the cycle, one that has moved from repricing transactional capacity to repricing contractual capacity.
-- Spencer Frazier, EVP of Sales and Marketing

2. Temporary Cost Headwinds From Network Expansion

The company absorbed over $50 million in sequential cost increases during the third quarter, driven by driver recruiting, sign-on bonuses, and elevated medical claims. Management treats these expenses as necessary investments to build driver capacity before volume demand returns.

Driver investments support visible demand and prepare our networks for growth. Fuel surcharge programs recover costs over time, although rapid movements create a timing mismatch and dilute margins.
-- Brad Delco, CFO

3. Dedicated Fleet Growth Signals Long-Term Demand

Shippers are turning to Dedicated Contract Services, J.B. Hunt's custom fleet management division, to secure predictable capacity as outside trucking becomes less reliable. Account setup costs temporarily squeeze profit margins, but new fleet additions create steady multiyear contract revenue.

During the quarter, we sold approximately 425 trucks of new deals, bringing our year-to-date new sales number to 970 trucks compared to our full year target for gross sales of 1,000 to 1,200 new trucks.
-- Brad Hicks, President of Dedicated Contract Services

Looking Ahead

Cost inflation is driving contract negotiations for upcoming renewals. J.B. Hunt relies on its scale and network density to restore margins across its business units.

After four challenging years during the freight recession and continued inflationary cost pressures across the business, our focus during the 2027 bid season is on repairing our margins to earn an appropriate return on our investments to support our future growth.
-- Darren Field, President of Intermodal

Capital allocation remains focused on internal fleet growth and share repurchases. Long-term returns depend on the execution of these rate increases.

We believe the actions we're taking today will strengthen our earnings power, it's going to expand our returns, and it will create long-term value for our shareholders.
-- Shelley Simpson, President and CEO
