Key Points

  • It crushed analyst estimates for both revenue and profitability.

  • But current global volatility could hinder its chances to repeat this feat.

Radiant Logistics (NYSEMKT: RLGT) was something of an underdog winner of a stock on the second trading day of the week. Many investors were willing to take the haul with the company's equity following its release of an estimates-beating quarterly earnings report. Radiant's stock closed the day almost 20% higher.

Driving the fundamentals higher

Radiant's fiscal fourth quarter saw the logistics and transportation services company earn over $261 million in revenue, for quite sizable year-over-year growth of almost 19%. That rate was dwarfed by the improvement in net income under generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), which surged 53% higher to $7.5 million, or $0.15 per diluted share.

Both headline metrics were well above the average analyst estimates, hence the excited investor reaction. The consensus pundit projection for revenue was under $232 million, while that for per-share net income was $0.06.

Radiant did not provide commentary in its quarterly earnings release. It did discuss the results of the full fiscal year in a 10-K regulatory filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, however. In that document, it attributed its gains to higher volume in U.S. forwarding, a rise in international airfreight, and, to a lesser extent, incremental revenue from expanded warehouse operations.

The volatility issue

Also in the 10-K, Radiant cautioned about the potential effects of external factors, writing that "global economic and trade conditions remain highly uncertain" and that they could continue to make for a volatile market. Given that, relatively long-term shareholders might do best to book profits on the Tuesday pop, as such volatility could work against the company and ultimately turn its fortunes.
