Prediction: Solana Will Replace Ethereum as the No. 1 Altcoin by 2030

Key Points

  • Solana is currently just one-fifth the size of Ethereum, with a $45 billion market cap.

  • Solana's rapid growth within decentralized finance (DeFi) could propel it much higher over the next few years.

  • In one hyper-bullish scenario, the price of Solana could soar from $76 to over $3,200 by 2030.

Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH) currently reigns as the No. 1 altcoin in the world, and it's not even close. With a market cap of $232 billion, Ethereum is approximately five times larger than its next closest competitor.

However, Ethereum is no longer growing as fast as it once did. And plenty of new competitors are now nipping at Ethereum's heels, eager to win market share away in areas ranging from decentralized finance (DeFi) to artificial intelligence (AI).

The one competitor on my radar right now is Solana (CRYPTO: SOL). I predict that it will replace Ethereum as the top altcoin by 2030. Here's why.

Solana's strategic pivot

Ever since its launch in 2020, Solana has tantalized investors as a faster, cheaper, and more efficient alternative to Ethereum. That's why, in 2023, Cathie Wood of Ark Invest gushed about the disruptive potential of Solana. And it's a big reason why many crypto investors have touted Solana as a potential "Ethereum killer."

Now that Solana is making a hard pivot into decentralized finance (DeFi), those speed and cost advantages matter more than ever. This is the area where Ethereum has always been dominant, and where upstart rivals have always struggled to carve out a meaningful niche. Today, Ethereum accounts for roughly 55% of all activity in DeFi, while Solana is a distant second, with only a 6% market share.

But that could be about to change. Solana is embracing more of the cutting-edge trends that are shaking up the world of DeFi, from stablecoins to real-world asset (RWA) tokenization. These are both potential multi-trillion-dollar market opportunities, and both are capable of propelling Solana to stratospheric new highs.

At a recent Stanford blockchain event, Vibhu Norby, the chief product officer of the Solana Foundation, highlighted that Solana now hopes to become "the Netflix or the Amazon of finance." That's a big vision. It speaks to Solana's desire to become the one blockchain destination where people go to buy and sell financial products. The goal is to aggregate every financial asset in one marketplace, all of it running on Solana's blockchain rails.

Future growth prospects for Solana

It remains to be seen whether Solana can ever deliver on this bold vision. After all, Solana is still just one-fifth the size of Ethereum, with a $45 billion market cap. It's not enough for Solana to just outperform Ethereum incrementally. It must deliver rapid, outsize gains if it hopes to leapfrog Ethereum by 2030.

So how high can Solana go? One of the most bullish future price targets comes from investment firm VanEck. According to its October 2023 bull case scenario, Solana could climb as high as $3,211 by the year 2030. Those are more than 40x gains, based on today's price of just $76.

If that comes to pass -- and it's admittedly a big "if" -- Solana will easily become the top altcoin in the world. That means a modest investment today could pay off big later for crypto investors willing to take a patient, long-term approach.
