Intel and Silver Lake backed Altera officially files for US IPO

Altera has confidentially filed for a U.S. initial public offering, the programmable-chip maker said Tuesday, moving the company closer to a return to the public markets. Reuters previously reported that the IPO could raise more than $2 billion as early as this year.

The filing also puts Altera back on the radar of semiconductor investors and could have implications for Intel, which retains a minority stake in the chipmaker alongside majority shareholder, private-equity firm Silver Lake.

Right now, there is still limited knowledge about the figues surrounding Altera’s potential IPO. The chipmaker has not released any numbers referring to its revenue, profitability or expected valuation, and the confidential filing means the company does not have to disclose any of these details at this stage.

Silver Lake and Intel backing

Altera is supported by private-equity firm Silver Lake and Intel (INTC), two key shareholders named in the filing. Reuters previously reported that the chipmaker was preparing an IPO that could raise more than $2 billion, citing people familiar with the plans.

A successful IPO could give Silver Lake a chance to monetize its stake, while giving Intel a fresh market-based measure of Altera’s value after selling control of the business last year. Intel sold a 51% stake to Silver Lake in 2025 in a deal that valued Altera at about $8.75 billion, after buying the company for $16.7 billion in 2015.

Market for Altera’s chips

Altera supplies programmable chips to industries where demand for specialized computing and connectivity hardware is growing, and its extensive customer base includes data centers, AI systems, and aerospace and defense institutions. These industries have different demand cycles and the company’s chips being capable of reconfiguration after they are produced serves them very well.

The offering will provide the first detailed look at the company’s financials for the public eye.
