Social Security provides a vital floor for your retirement, but it's meant to supplement your income rather than replace it entirely. The amount you receive depends heavily on when you choose to claim, making it one of the most consequential financial decisions you'll face.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) calculates your benefit based on an average of your wages across your 35 highest-earning years, adjusted for inflation and run through a specific formula. Your final check size is then determined by your full retirement age (FRA) and the age you begin collecting.

How claiming age and history shape your check

The data reveals a clear increase between ages 62 and 70, with the average benefit growing by 59.7%. This represents a monthly gap of $850.28, or $10,203.36 per year.

Full retirement age (FRA) ranges from 66 to 67, depending on your birth year, and it's 67 for everyone born in 1960 or later. If you claim at 62, you face a permanent reduction of up to 30%, while waiting until 70 earns you an 8% annual increase through delayed retirement credits.

A second pattern appears after age 70, as averages begin to decline slightly. This doesn't mean the SSA cuts benefits for individuals. Instead, older groups likely include more people who claimed early at permanent reductions.

Women also make up a larger share of the oldest groups because they tend to live longer. Because they often have lower lifetime earnings due to the gender pay gap and time spent caregiving, their presence in the data lowers the overall average among the oldest retirees.

Even at the age-70 peak of $2,274.68 per month, or $27,296.16 per year, benefits rarely cover every bill. That peak falls $34,135.84 short of the $61,432 average senior household spending reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

A 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) will take effect in 2027, adding about $82 a month on top of that age-70 benefit. While these adjustments are designed to keep pace with inflation, they often fall short.

The most useful number for your planning is the average that matches your own intended claiming age.

Your checks likely won't be enough to retire on at any age

Even those who claim Social Security benefits at age 70, when they qualify for their maximum checks, rarely live comfortably on their benefits alone. You'll probably need other sources of retirement income to cover what Social Security doesn't.

Personal savings are your best bet if they're available to you. You're free to spend that money on anything you like, but remember it may have to last you 20 years or more, so choose a withdrawal strategy designed to make it last. If you don't have a lot of personal savings, you may need a job or other government benefits to supplement your Social Security checks.

Make sure you come up with a plan for how you'll cover your remaining living expenses before you apply for Social Security. If you're married, be sure to factor in your spouse's Social Security checks and personal savings as well, and make sure you're both on the same page about when each person plans to claim.
