  • The service is intended to offer a higher degree of security for crypto holdings than other options.

  • Solana and Ethereum could pick up a small new tailwind here.

There will soon be a new crypto security service offered by Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOGL), and it could well provide a mild boost for Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH) and Solana (CRYPTO: SOL). Google's new cryptocurrency platform, which it calls Google Multi-Party Compute (MPC), was announced on Oct. 28, and Alphabet is already using it to secure its own digital assets parked on both of those blockchains. MPC's commercial launch is scheduled for early 2027.

Google argues its relationships with traditional financial institutions will give it an edge in providing cybersecure crypto custody, but how that will help Solana and Ethereum is another matter. Let's analyze the situation.

Google is aiming to help financial institutions get confident in holding crypto

MPC is only Alphabet's latest bid to compete more in cryptocurrency.

Google now also runs its own blockchain, the Google Cloud Universal Ledger (GCUL), which Google unveiled in 2025, and which is also aimed at financial institutions and other approved participants.

The technical basis for the new service is splitting a crypto wallet's private key, the secret code that confers control of the wallet, into fragments that are then held on separate computer systems. This makes it much more difficult for an attacker to assemble a complete private key and proceed with the subsequent theft of funds. Google's tool is also supposed to check each incoming transaction against a list of a financial institution's rules, like spending and transfer limits, before allowing the transaction to proceed.

The fit between this product and its target market is already pretty plainly obvious: In a 2026 survey by American Banker, 47% of the surveyed financial institutions cited cybersecurity as a top barrier to their adoption of blockchain tech. That issue is particularly salient at the moment. On Oct. 29, the largest crypto exchange, Binance, was hacked, and the cyberthieves made off with $6.3 billion.

Google plans to support two different transaction signing methods that institutions can use at launch.

One is the Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA), which Ethereum uses and which is very widely used elsewhere, and the other is Ed25519, which Solana and many other networks use. Importantly, ECDSA also secures Bitcoin, and the ledger behind XRP, so the company's approach doesn't favor any specific chain.

Should you buy these coins because of Google's new service?

The bullish factor here for Solana and Ethereum is that Alphabet already uses the platform to secure some of its own digital assets on both chains. It's a minor boost at best.

Offering safer storage to institutions won't make anyone want these coins who does not want them already. Big investors already have custodied access through crypto exchange-traded funds (ETFs), and demand there is both volatile and frequently soft. In the first seven trading days of October 2026, Ethereum ETFs experienced $635 million in net outflows, while Solana ETFs saw $24.8 million in net outflows.

Furthermore, coinholders gain mainly from new net buying and new network usage. Parked coins in long-term storage are rarely used for transactions, adding little to the network activity backing what makes these cryptocurrencies valuable.

Google's GCUL network will be competing for capital and activity, too. Google is pitching the GCUL as a "credibly neutral" permissioned network that any bank can use for payments and asset tokenization, or transforming the ownership rights of stocks and bonds into tradeable crypto. Every bank that chooses to do its work there is business that Ethereum and Solana don't win, and assets they don't get to have parked on their networks.

Therefore, investors should treat this service launch as a small positive, and as a confidence-building step that could eventually lead to some more institutional capital heading to crypto.

In the first half of 2027, watch both coins' ETF flows, and watch for bank announcements of crypto operations naming Google's service as a collaborator. If net ETF inflows return right as banks are signing on, it means that the asset custody story is giving way to new demand, and the situation will be more bullish than it is now.
