On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 21, 2026, Knight-Swift (NYSE:KNX) announced expanding operating margins as truckload pricing recovery outpaced cost growth. Higher pricing power shows that capacity cuts across the trucking sector are finally driving sustained profit growth for large operators. Operating leverage gives the business substantial room to compound earnings as market demand stabilizes.

Three things management said stand out.

1. Freight Rates Are Outpacing Cost Inflation to Drive Margins

Rising truckload rates are driving operational leverage as industry supply contracts after years of low pricing. Management controlled expense growth, which allowed nearly seven-tenths of third-quarter rate increases to flow straight to operating margin.

Year-over-year gains in revenue per mile, excluding fuel surcharge, have accelerated from 2.5% in Q1 to 12.2% in Q3. Over the same period, cost per mile stayed in a tight range between 3.3% and 3.8%.
-- Andrew Hess, Chief Financial Officer

2. In-House Driver Academies Provide a Structural Hiring Advantage

Finding qualified drivers remains a key hurdle across the trucking industry during market turnarounds. Knight-Swift uses its network of 12 commercial driver's license (CDL) training academies--the credential required to operate large commercial trucks--to recruit and train drivers directly, bypassing expensive external hiring channels and stabilizing fleet capacity.

We have 12 CDL academies across the U.S., with plans to open a few more in the coming months, plus partner schools operating on-site at seven additional terminals.
-- Andrew Hess, Chief Financial Officer

3. Contract Negotiations Signal Double-Digit Rate Growth Ahead

As annual contract negotiations begin, tight market capacity gives the company strong pricing leverage with shippers. Management expects to start upcoming contract discussions with double-digit percentage rate hikes, setting up further margin recovery into 2027.

I certainly feel like we're in a position to start with at least double-digit increases as we get going in this bid season, and we'll see how the market progresses from here.
-- Adam Miller, Chief Executive Officer

Looking Ahead

Peak season demand is accelerating as freight capacity stays constrained. Unmatched one-way scale and an in-house driver pipeline allow the business to capture volume while maintaining strict pricing discipline.

The Truckload freight market continues to remain tight, and while broad measures of industry demand have been largely stable, demand for our capacity has been strong.
-- Adam Miller, Chief Executive Officer

Converting this market dynamic into long-term profit requires expanding seated truck count and boosting mileage per tractor. Filling open trucks remains the top focus for driving compound earnings growth.

That's probably a number one priority as we get rate, as we improve margins, is to try to grow organically into this market.
-- Adam Miller, Chief Executive Officer
