Organic revenue grew 4% in the third quarter of 2026.
Electronics organic revenue grew 31% on semiconductor demand.
Customer-backed innovation contributed over 3% to full-year revenue growth.
On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 27, 2026, Illinois Tool Works (NYSE:ITW) announced full-year earnings guidance increases following organic revenue growth of nearly 4%. The industrial manufacturer benefits from accelerating demand for semiconductor and electronic assembly equipment alongside steady margin expansion. Three things management said stand out.
The segment that produces microchip manufacturing and electronic assembly equipment saw sales jump 16%, powered by a 31% surge in its electronics product line. Management maintained long-term investments in these specialized tool lines, positioning the business to capture the expansion of customer factory builds.
I mean, these customers are working very hard to increase fab capacity, produce printed circuit boards and meet the growing needs of AI.
-- Christopher A. O'Herlihy, President and Chief Executive Officer
Customer-backed innovation, which measures revenue from new products developed directly with customers, minus revenue from older discontinued lines, now contributes more than 3% to annual sales growth. This internal product pipeline gives the company pricing leverage and protects organic growth even when broad industrial markets slow down.
What is evident is that the work that we have done over the past two, three years, has really resulted in this step change from what was 1% five years ago to 2% two years ago to a 3% contribution level right now.
-- Christopher A. O'Herlihy, President and Chief Executive Officer
Operating margin reached 27.8%, with internal efficiency initiatives contributing 130 basis points of profit expansion. Higher product pricing offset increases in raw material costs, though rising wages and localized inflation created minor near-term pressures in the automotive and construction segments.
In the quarter, price increases and other actions offset higher raw material costs in dollar and margin terms. Those favorable drivers were partially offset by inflation in other areas, such as employee related costs.
-- Michael Larsen, Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
Industrial order momentum is picking up across equipment lines, allowing management to raise its full-year earnings expectations. The company relies on its 80/20 operating system, a strategy that focuses resources on high-volume customers and simplifies product offerings, alongside proprietary product designs to sustain margins near 30%. Management is watching raw material inflation and timing lags in automotive price recovery.
Demand momentum continues to build across several of our end markets. Notably in welding and test and measurement electronics.
-- Christopher A. O'Herlihy, President and Chief Executive Officer
Long-term performance targets depend on maintaining organic sales expansion alongside disciplined cost execution across all seven operating segments.
Our long term performance framework, 4%+ organic growth, and 30% operating margins by 2030 is very much intact. And remains well within our reach.
-- Christopher A. O'Herlihy, President and Chief Executive Officer
