Choosing between high-growth coffee and steady consumer staples can be a difficult decision for many. That's why deciding between Dutch Bros (NYSE:BROS) and Kimberly-Clark (NASDAQ:KMB) requires a look at their fundamentals.

Dutch Bros is an expanding drive-thru coffee chain known for its unique culture and high-energy beverage offerings. Kimberly-Clark is a household name in personal care, providing essential goods like tissues and diapers globally. Comparing them highlights the trade-off between growth potential and the stability of established consumer staples.

The case for Dutch Bros

Dutch Bros focuses on high-volume drive-thru locations and a beverage-first menu that resonates with a younger demographic. The company has expanded to 1,314 shops, operating as a standout among retail stocks by focusing on speed and community culture. It relies on Portland Bottling Co. and Lieb Foods for its proprietary Rebel energy drinks.

In FY 2025, revenue reached nearly $1.6 billion, representing growth of approximately 27.9% compared to the prior year. This led to net income of roughly $79.8 million, up from approximately $35.3 million in FY 2024.

The case for Kimberly-Clark

Kimberly-Clark is a global personal care powerhouse with brands holding top market positions in multiple countries. Walmart (NASDAQ:WMT) is a major customer, accounting for approximately 16% of net sales in its latest annual report. Customer concentration like this adds a layer of risk to the business. The company has also entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Kenvue (NYSE:KVUE), a move designed to bolster its personal care portfolio.

In its latest annual report, filed for FY 2025, revenue reached approximately $16.4 billion, which was a decrease from the prior year. Despite lower sales, the company reported net income of nearly $2 billion.

Risk profile comparison

Dutch Bros faces significant competition from Starbucks and McDonald's, which requires constant investment in branding and digital technology. The chain also deals with geographic concentration. This makes the company vulnerable to regional economic shifts or weather events, such as wildfire-related disruptions.

Kimberly-Clark faces risks from its pending acquisition of Kenvue, which could lead to integration challenges and higher debt levels. The company is also vulnerable to commodity volatility for materials like cellulose fiber, often sourced from large providers like Suzano (NYSE:SUZ). Additionally, its international operations must navigate geopolitical instability and trade tariffs. Competitive pressure from Procter & Gamble and private-label brands is also a threat to watch.

Valuation comparison

Investors will notice that Dutch Bros carries a higher price-to-sales(P/S) ratio and forward price-to-earnings(P/E) ratio than Kimberly-Clark, reflecting its higher growth expectations.

Which stock would I buy in 2026?

I like Dutch Bros as an investable opportunity; it could fit into a portfolio as a high-growth stock, warranting a small, speculative stake. As it's in fewer than 30 states, it has plenty of expansion ahead, but what's even more important is that it's a company making money in the here and now. In 2025, it had a net income of $117.3 million, and in the second quarter of 2026 alone, net income was $51.6 million.

That said, in a battle where only one stock could win, I would still pick Kimberly-Clark. That's because of all the uncertainty that is swirling around the markets, which could more easily send the Dutch Bros stock price lower than it could the stock price for Kimberly-Clark. As a comparison, so far in 2026, the Kimberly-Clark stock price is up 8.1%, while the stock price for Dutch Bros is down nearly 32%. That's because Kimberly-Clark can serve as a more defensive position in a portfolio, thanks to the essential nature of its products: paper towels, toilet paper, and more. In addition to having a recession-resistant business model, Kimberly-Clark pays a very generous dividend that yields 4.6%. On top of stock price appreciation, that dividend payout can help boost total returns.

Ultimately, while I like the revenue growth opportunities ahead for Dutch Bros, with stubborn inflation, potential interest rate hikes on the horizon, and plenty of other curveballs that could hit the markets, I'd rather be more defensive here with Kimberly-Clark than own a growth stock.
