Stock Market Today, Oct. 21: Super Micro Computer Raises Full-Year Revenue Guidance on Strong AI Demand

Source The Motley Fool

Super Micro Computer (NASDAQ:SMCI), an AI-optimized servers and storage systems provider, closed at $35.57, up 9.55%. Updated guidance released last night raised fiscal first-quarter 2027 revenue and margin expectations on strong AI demand.
Trading volume reached 80.2 million shares, coming in about 76% above its three-month average of 45.5 million shares. Super Micro Computer IPO'd in 2007 and has grown 3,958% since going public.

How the markets moved today

The S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC) rose 0.59% to 7,758, and the Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX:^IXIC) climbed 1.05% to 26,703. Among makers of computer hardware, including AI servers and storage systems, and data center infrastructure peers, Dell Technologies closed at $486.04, up 5.30%, and Hewlett Packard Enterprise closed at $58.18, up 3.73%, as AI infrastructure buying broadened.

What this means for investors

Super Micro's fiscal first-quarter update turned heads among investors. While the company won't report earnings until Nov. 3, the big news came with the preliminary release. With prior guidance calling for revenue at the midpoint of the range at $15 billion, the latest update of $18.5 billion to $19.5 billion implies a 25% improvement.

It wasn't just about revenue, either. Supermicro stock also jumped because of how much will flow to the bottom line. Gross profit margin is expected to be as high as 12.5%, up from the previous guidance of up to 10.8%.

The news confirms that AI infrastructure growth remains strong, which will help Super Micro and its peers continue to impress investors.
