Social Security Beneficiaries Are Getting an Above-Average COLA in 2027. Here's the Downside.

Source The Motley Fool

Key Points

  • Social Security beneficiaries will get a 3.6% COLA in 2027.

  • This will significantly increase Social Security's expenses next year.

  • It may also accelerate the depletion of the program's trust funds, potentially leading to benefit cuts.

All Social Security beneficiaries will get a 3.6% benefit boost in January, thanks to the 2027 cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) announced on Oct. 14. This is slightly larger than what recent estimates predicted, and it's above average compared to the last 50 years.

That's encouraging if you've been struggling with rising costs over the past several months. But there's an important downside to a large COLA that's worth being aware of, as it could have a significant effect on your finances in a few years.

A large COLA will significantly increase Social Security's expenses

A 3.6% Social Security cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) will add roughly $75 to the average check per month, giving the typical senior about $900 more per year. Multiply that by millions of beneficiaries, and Social Security's expenses are set to take a pretty significant leap next year.

Revenue from Social Security payroll taxes and benefit taxes will increase slightly to offset some of these rising costs, but it won't be enough. Social Security has been spending more than it takes in since 2021, and its expenses have exceeded non-interest income since 2010.

The only way it's been able to pay out benefits as scheduled so far has been to make up the difference with money from the program's trust funds. But these won't last forever. The latest Trustees Report, published in June 2026, revealed that the trust funds are expected to be depleted by the fourth quarter of 2032. This would result in a 23% cut in benefits unless the government intervenes.

Increased expenses from the 2027 COLA could accelerate this deadline, though we won't know by how much until the next Social Security Trustees' Report is published. But that doesn't mean we're a few years away from major benefit cuts.

What's next for Social Security?

The government will likely take steps to avoid a 23% cut to Social Security benefits, but we don't yet know what changes it will make or when they will take effect. Workers may face higher Social Security payroll taxes or a higher full retirement age (FRA), which would amount to a benefit cut to younger workers. Washington could also decide to change the rules surrounding Social Security benefit taxation on seniors.

There isn't much ordinary Americans can do right now besides budget carefully and plan to stretch their savings as long as possible. Once we know how the government plans to change Social Security, everyone will need to review their retirement plan and make adjustments to remain financially secure for the foreseeable future.
