Investors choosing between high-octane digital growth and steady retail dividends face a classic dilemma in late 2026. This comparison looks at whether Shopify (NASDAQ:SHOP) or Target (NYSE:TGT) is the better buy today.

Shopify provides the underlying software infrastructure for millions of online merchants across the globe. Target operates as a major physical and digital retailer, serving guests through a vast network of stores in the United States. These companies represent two distinct ways to invest in the future of modern commerce.

The case for Shopify

Shopify is a tech stock that provides essential cloud-based tools for modern e-commerce businesses. In its latest annual report, filed for the fiscal year ended Dec. 31, 2025, the company noted it serves millions of merchants in over 175 countries. It maintains strategic partnerships with firms like Alphabet while serving a diverse ecosystem of over 21,000 app developers.

In FY 2025, revenue reached nearly $11.6 billion, representing growth of roughly 30.1% over the prior year. The company reported net income of approximately $1.2 billion for the same period. This resulted in a net margin of close to 10.7%, which measures the percentage of revenue remaining as profit after all expenses.

As of its December 2025 balance sheet, the debt-to-equity ratio is roughly 0.0x, while the current ratio, which measures the ability to cover short-term debts, is approximately 6.0x. Free cash flow for the period reached nearly $2.0 billion. Note that stock-based compensation accounted for roughly 22.1% of operating cash flow, inflating reported cash generation, since SBC is a non-cash expense added back in the cash flow statement.

The case for Target

Target operates as a massive general merchandise retailer through its network of nearly 2,000 stores and various digital channels. According to its latest annual report, filed for the fiscal year ended Jan. 31, 2026, the company employed approximately 415,000 team members. It differentiates itself through brand partnerships with Apple, CVS Health, Levi Strauss, and Starbucks.

In FY 2025, revenue reached nearly $104.8 billion, a decrease of approximately 1.7% from the previous year. The company generated net income of roughly $3.7 billion, with a net margin of close to 3.5%. These figures reflect Target's core retail operations and its growing retail media network, Roundel, which provides advertising services to third-party vendors.

As of its January 2026 balance sheet, the debt-to-equity ratio is approximately 1.0x, which compares total debt to shareholder equity. The current ratio, which compares short-term assets to short-term liabilities, is roughly 0.9x. Free cash flow for the fiscal year reached nearly $2.8 billion.

Risk profile comparison

Shopify faces intense competition from established platforms and niche providers as agentic commerce continues to evolve. The company is currently managing legal risks, including a proposed class action lawsuit over unauthorized data collection and intellectual property litigation in Australia. Reliance on third-party models and seasonal fluctuations in gross merchandise volume also add to the company's complex risk profile.

Target competes with massive rivals like Amazon and must constantly adapt its pricing to maintain market share. Its performance is highly sensitive to U.S. macroeconomic conditions and consumer discretionary spending habits. The retailer also faces challenges with inventory theft and a product liability lawsuit over infant formula sales, while managing the upcoming termination of its partnership with Ulta Beauty.

Valuation comparison

Target is significantly less expensive than Shopify based on future earnings estimates and sales over the past 12 months.

Which stock would I buy in 2026?

The choice between buying Shopify and Target is intriguing to me, since I own both stocks. However, if buying today, my choice would be Target.

I believe Shopify has a competitive advantage in combining an easy-to-use sales platform with an ecosystem that helps entrepreneurs handle many ancillary tasks. Still, amid its 91.5 forward P/E ratio, I have not added any shares in years.

That is not the case with Target. Although the fiscal 2025 numbers do not show its recent progress, it has shifted direction under new CEO Michael Fiddelke, who took that position in February.

Fiddelke has pledged $5 billion to upgrade its stores, product mix, and supply chain. After years of declining net sales, sales growth returned in fiscal 2026, pushing profits and stock higher.

Despite those gains, the 15 forward P/E ratio means it trades at an attractive price. Moreover, its $4.64-per-share annual dividend has risen for 55 straight years, making it a Dividend King. With its 3% dividend yield, its cash return is arguably still high enough to draw income investors.

Hence, while Shopify's competitive advantage should help its stock long term, Target's low valuation, improving growth, and attractive dividend probably make it a more suitable choice at this time.
