CoreWeave (NASDAQ:CRWV), an AI cloud infrastructure provider, closed at $61.12, down 0.44%. The stock moved after Goldman Sachs upgraded it to Buy and raised its target price, while investors are watching the late-October results.
Trading volume reached 99.1M shares, coming in about 198% above its three-month average of 33.3M shares. CoreWeave IPO'd in 2025 and has grown 53% since going public.
S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) closed at 7,691, up 0.42%, while the Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX: ^IXIC) finished at 26,431, up 1.11%. In artificial intelligence cloud infrastructure and data center compute services, sector rivals Nebius Group closed at $170.24, up 2.88%, and IREN closed at $27.73, up 2.74%.
Goldman's move seems to represent a contrarian view of the cloud stock, which had traded near 52-week lows before the upgrade.
The stock plummeted last week as Reuters highlighted bond stress, noting that the company's debt, which was over $35 billion at the end of the second quarter of 2026, had weighed on the company.
Goldman made it clear it saw things differently with its upgrade. It believes that its average recurring revenue (ARR) per megawatt is "biased to the upside" due to the industry's tight supply of neocloud infrastructure, meaning it should earn enough revenue to service debt and expand capacity.
To be clear, this is a question of perception, as the company has not experienced a formal downgrade in its bond rating. Still, as a former CoreWeave shareholder, I perceived the debt risk as serious and moved to the sidelines this past summer.
Indeed, Goldman could be right if the high demand for infrastructure remains in place as predicted. Moreover, the distressed debt affects the ability to issue more debt. That means the company should remain stable as long as it services existing debt, but growth may also slow if it cannot finance as much additional construction.
However, amid the likely need for more capital and the rising cost and difficulty of obtaining it, I think watching this stock rather than buying it is the more prudent move for now.
