On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 16, 2026, M&T Bank (NYSE:MTB) reported that year-to-date net operating earnings per share increased 17% over the prior year. The bank continues to expand its deposit base to fund loan growth. That internal capital generation gives it flexibility to absorb regulatory shifts without diluting shareholder value. Three takeaways from management's presentation highlight how the business is positioning itself for long-term compounding.

1. Transferring Securities Protects Capital from Regulatory Changes

Management transferred $8.3 billion of residential mortgage-backed securities from available-for-sale, which are investments sold before maturity, to held-to-maturity to insulate tangible capital from accumulated other comprehensive income, or unrealized paper losses. That move shields regulatory capital ratios if proposed bank rules begin counting paper portfolio losses against equity reserves.

That action reflects our continued discipline to protecting tangible capital and positioning us well with potential regulatory framework that includes AFS related AOCI and regulatory capital.

2. Customer Deposit Growth Replaces Costly Wholesale Borrowings

Expanding customer deposits allowed M&T Bank to lower its reliance on average short-term wholesale borrowings by $2.8 billion during the quarter. Funding loan growth through primary operating accounts keeps deposit costs manageable while preserving net interest margin, which measures the profit spread on lending.

But first and foremost, we're going to try to fund our loan growth with our deposit growth.
-- Daryl Bible, Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

3. Underwriting Structure Takes Priority Over Aggressive Loan Pricing

Despite competitive pressures in commercial real estate and business lending, management refuses to compromise on credit deal terms to chase volume. Maintaining strict loan covenants and structural protections ensures credit quality remains durable across economic cycles, even if loan growth might slow.

We don't want to sacrifice on structure is really what's important to us, and that's something that we aren't going to change from that perspective.
-- Daryl Bible, Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

Looking Ahead

Asset repricing across fixed-rate loans and the investment portfolio provides ongoing revenue support. Strong customer relationships and deep market roots enable the bank to maintain underwriting standards without sacrificing market share.

I feel very optimistic on the outlook for net interest income and net interest margin.
-- Daryl Bible, Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

Long-term performance hinges on maintaining pricing discipline and optimizing funding costs across economic shifts. Management remains committed to generating attractive returns through prudent capital deployment.

The strength and diversification of M&T's balance sheet, asset quality, and revenue will continue to allow M&T to outperform consistently across cycles.
-- Daryl Bible, Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
