Micron vs. SanDisk: As Storage Sector Drops Broadly, Which Is the Better Long-Term Investment?

Source Tradingkey

TradingKey - The US stock memory sector has recently experienced a continuous pullback, with Micron Technology (MU), SanDisk (SNDK), Seagate (STX), and Western Digital (WDC) all posting notable declines. As of October 14 Eastern Time, Micron fell 4.1%, sliding for the fifth consecutive trading day, while the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index dropped for the sixth straight trading day. Recent pressure stems on the one hand from profit-taking after previous sharp gains, and on the other hand from progress made by Chinese memory manufacturer ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) in a novel memory cell architecture, which has raised market concerns over future capacity and intensified competition.

However, from a long-term investment perspective, Micron and SanDisk are not identical memory companies. Micron's core business covers DRAM, HBM, and NAND, whereas SanDisk is more focused on NAND Flash and enterprise SSDs. This difference determines that the two companies have distinctly different growth sources and risk structures in the AI wave. So, which one is more worthy of long-term investment?

Micron vs. SanDisk: What Is the Biggest Difference?

Micron's biggest advantage is its more diversified product structure.

In the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026, Micron's DRAM revenue reached approximately $39.8 billion, accounting for about 73% of total revenue. Among this, high-bandwidth memory such as HBM directly benefits from AI accelerators from Nvidia and AMD as well as the construction of large data centers. From a market perspective, Micron simultaneously possesses two AI storage growth paths, with HBM/DRAM responsible for AI computing and NAND responsible for data storage.

SanDisk, on the other hand, is more concentrated on NAND Flash. Its core products include enterprise SSDs, client SSDs, and consumer storage devices. Therefore, its AI business mainly benefits from the rapid increase in data center storage capacity, rather than HBM demand near GPUs.

This creates a clear distinction between the two companies:

Therefore, if AI servers continue to expand rapidly, Micron can capture both computing-side memory demand and data storage demand; SanDisk, meanwhile, is more focused on betting on the NAND and enterprise SSD markets.

Micron: HBM Introduces New Variable to Traditional Memory Cycle

Micron's latest earnings report showed very strong performance. In the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026, the company's revenue reached $54.23 billion, compared to $41.46 billion in the previous quarter and just $11.32 billion in the same period last year; GAAP net income reached $37.7 billion. Full-year revenue reached $133.19 billion, while adjusted free cash flow reached $62.31 billion.

One of the core growth drivers is AI data centers. Combined fourth-quarter revenue from Micron's Cloud Memory and Core Data Center businesses exceeded $34.2 billion, with the Core Data Center business achieving a gross margin of 90%.

The biggest drawback of traditional DRAM is its strong cyclicality. When Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron expand capacity simultaneously, prices are prone to decline; however, HBM has reshaped part of the industry structure. HBM technology is more complex and consumes more wafer capacity, while demand for high-bandwidth memory from AI GPUs is surging. Consequently, Micron's future profitability depends not only on traditional PC and smartphone DRAM prices, but also increasingly on AI data center demand.

However, the recent pullback in Micron's stock price also shows that the market has begun to worry about future supply increases. Technological progress at CXMT poses potential competitive pressure, particularly on the traditional DRAM market.

SanDisk: NAND Cycle Rebound Brings Greater Earnings Elasticity

According to the latest financial report, in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026, the company's revenue reached $8.97 billion, up 51% quarter-over-quarter; full-year revenue reached $20.25 billion, up 175% year-over-year. Among segments, the data center business saw the most significant growth, with fourth-quarter data center revenue reaching $2.98 billion, up 103% quarter-over-quarter; full-year fiscal 2026 data center revenue reached $5.15 billion, up 437% year-over-year.

AI data centers need to store vast amounts of information, including training data, model parameters, inference data, and video. Consequently, demand for enterprise SSDs is growing, becoming a new source of growth for SanDisk.

Meanwhile, about one-third of SanDisk's fourth-quarter revenue growth came from increased shipment volumes, while about two-thirds stemmed from price increases.

It is worth noting that while rising NAND prices can rapidly improve SanDisk's revenue and profits, the company's earnings could experience greater volatility if Samsung, SK Hynix, Kioxia, and Chinese manufacturers increase output, sending NAND prices into a downcycle.

As a result, SanDisk is essentially an investment target with more concentrated exposure to the NAND price cycle.

Micron vs. SanDisk: Which Is Better for Long-Term Investment?

From a long-term investment perspective over the next 3 to 5 years, Micron currently has a relatively more balanced fundamental structure. The core reason is that the company operates three product lines simultaneously—HBM, DRAM, and NAND—enabling it to capture demand for both AI computing power and data storage, while having already generated over $62.3 billion in adjusted free cash flow in fiscal year 2026.

Meanwhile, if AI data center SSD demand continues to grow while NAND supply and demand remain tight, SanDisk's revenue and profits may exhibit greater cyclical elasticity. Its 437% data center revenue growth in fiscal year 2026 has already demonstrated this trend.

For investors who value AI business diversification, cash flow, and long-term earnings stability, Micron currently presents more complete fundamentals; however, for those who are more optimistic about the NAND price cycle and enterprise SSD demand while being able to withstand higher cyclical volatility, SanDisk offers stronger earnings elasticity.
