On its third quarter of 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 15, 2026, U.S. Bancorp (NYSE:USB) reported record net revenue of $8 billion alongside expanding operating efficiency. For long-term investors, the bank's strategy hinges on diversifying fee income and shifting toward floating-rate commercial loans while keeping costs tight. Strengthening capital buffers and expanding high-margin deposit channels provide the foundation for consistent compounding. Three things management said stand out.

1. Capital Markets Push Creates a Bigger Fee Revenue Engine

Expanding institutional fee channels reduces reliance on spread income, stabilizing earnings across shifting interest rate cycles. Integrating recent acquisitions like broker-dealer BTIG gives the bank wider access to corporate advisory and trading fees, raising fee contributions to nearly half of total revenue.

We expect capital markets to grow from 8% to 10% or more of total company revenue over the next 3 to 5 years.
-- Gunjan Kedia, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

2. Strategic Partnerships Drive High-Yield Loan and Deposit Expansion

Scaling specialized card deals and small business tools secures low-cost deposits while adding floating-rate commercial loans that reprice quickly as borrowing rates move. Expanding co-branded merchant partnerships accelerates loan volumes without lowering credit standards.

The Amazon small business credit card portfolio contributed approximately $900 million and $1.7 billion to the third quarter average and period end loans, respectively.
-- John C. Stern, Vice Chair and Chief Financial Officer

3. Expanding Margins and Capital Generation Clear the Path for Stock Buybacks

Reinvesting $10 billion of maturing lower-yielding assets into higher-yielding loans each quarter improves net interest margin, the gap between what a bank earns on loans and pays on deposits. Rebuilding regulatory capital through retained earnings allows management to restart stock repurchases after pausing to absorb loan growth.

We expect our capital ratios to build from here. Positioning us to resume share repurchases over the next quarter or two.
-- John C. Stern, Vice Chair and Chief Financial Officer

Looking Ahead

Revenue momentum and expense discipline are combining to widen operating margins, allowing the bank to fund technology upgrades while raising returns. Its expanding small business footprint, deep corporate payment rails, and asset-sensitive balance sheet position it to benefit from higher reinvestment rates. Management is watching broad commercial credit demand, interest rate shifts, and pricing discipline across deposit channels.

The business model is capable of generating both of them in balance.
-- Gunjan Kedia, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

With diversified fee revenue stream growth and ongoing balance sheet optimization, the bank aims to generate sustainable risk-adjusted capital.

Our diversified business mix, customer centric approach, and disciplined execution position us to deliver attractive returns and long term shareholder value.
-- Gunjan Kedia, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
