Key Points

  • Social Security taxes are a fixed percentage of your wages up to a limit.

  • That limit increases every year based on inflation.

  • Only about 6% of workers will exceed the taxable limit in a given year.

  • Motley Fool Issues Rare "Total Conviction" Buy Alert ›

Most people know that a portion of their paycheck is set aside every pay period to go toward Social Security. You can see exactly how much of your paycheck went to Social Security by taking a glance at your W-2. For most employees, that number will be 6.2% of their wages. Your employer pitches in another 6.2%.

But that tax applies only to a limited amount of income each year. Once you earn over the limit, you no longer have to pay Social Security taxes. The Social Security Administration adjusts that limit for inflation each year, which means you could have to pay more in Social Security taxes next year.

Who has to pay more in Social Security taxes in 2027?

The 2027 maximum taxable earnings climbed to $192,300 with the most recent update for inflation. That's up from $184,500 in 2026.

That means anyone who earned above $184,500 in 2026 and expects to earn just as much or more in 2027 will end up paying more in Social Security tax next year. If you exceed the maximum taxable earnings limit of $192,300 next year, you'll end up paying $483.60 in additional taxes for Social Security, and your employer will pay the same amount.

It's worth pointing out that only a tiny fraction of workers will exceed that threshold. The Social Security Administration estimates that roughly 6% of workers earn above the taxable limit in any given year. Less than 20% of workers will ever earn above the limit for a year in their career. That means the vast majority of people won't notice any impact on their Social Security tax rate. But if you get a raise next year, you'll likely pay a commensurate amount more to Social Security.

Note that there's no earnings cap on Medicare taxes. You'll have to pay 1.45% of your wages to Medicare (with another 1.45% coming from your employer) no matter how much you earn.

While higher earnings today result in paying more in Social Security taxes, you'll also be eligible for a bigger retirement benefit down the line. Your retirement benefit is calculated based on the highest-earning years of your career, adjusted for inflation. However, that applies only to earnings subject to Social Security taxes. With the taxable limit moving higher in 2027, earning at or above that limit means you'll be eligible for a larger retirement benefit when you claim Social Security.
