AMD Stock Breaks Triangle as $2 Trillion AI Outlook Puts $524 in Focus

Source Tradingkey

TradingKey - AMD began trading on Thursday, September 10 at $521.10, which represents a verified close of $521.10 on Wednesday, September 9, up 3.04%, and lines up well with the chart reference of $521.16. The stock has now broken the descending trendline that contained the previous consolidation and traded as high as roughly $526.79. The focus is now on whether price can sustain the breakout. Given the fundamental backdrop, the timing is important. AMD's latest Citi update materially added to the opportunity that the upside has, and management highlighted a $2 trillion AI opportunity by 2030, and potential Data Center revenue of $70 billion by 2027 and an MI450 ramp beginning this quarter.

Citi Reset the Size of AMD’s AI Opportunity

The most important change from the previous AMD set up is the management view of the market. At Citi, AMD said its total AI opportunity is potentially $2 trillion, with the server CPU opportunity in the range of $220 billion.

More importantly for the near term, management said Data Center revenue could roughly double to $70 billion by 2027. From AI GPUs, this could be in the range of $40 billion, with server CPUs and the remainder of the business.

Obviously, these are not firm revenue numbers, but they show that AMD is seeing a much larger opportunity than just several quarters ago.

MI450 and Helios Are the Next Execution Test

At present, the most significant Product Catalyst is MI450. AMD will commence production shipments near the end of Q3, with a significant step-up in Q4 and another increase in Q1 2027.

The launch of MI450 will be achieved through Helios, AMD’s rack-scale platform that combines Instinct GPUs and EPYC CPUs with networking and the ROCm software and will make the launch more complex than a standard chip launch since AMD will need to manage the coordination of the accelerators, processors, HBM, substrates, networking, and system integration at scale.

The customer base is already significant with the addition of Meta, OpenAI, and Anthropic as major anchor customers with plans for multi-generation or multi-gigawatt deployments, and Microsoft has plans for a large deployment of Helios on Azure.

Supply, Not Demand, Is Becoming the Bottleneck

The largest talking point from the Citi notes was the notable shift for AMD from demand to supply. In the management call, they mentioned tightness in advanced wafers, HBM memory, advanced packaging, and substrates.

AMD has already secured $29-$30 billion of purchase commitments to support future production, and they did mention the biggest allocation increase from TSMC among its customers.

This is bullish, as it demonstrates there are additional supply constraints. However, if HBM, advanced packaging or wafer supply does not improve, AMD could be leaving significant potential revenue on the table with strong orders and constrained supply.

Margins Could Dip as Rack-Scale Systems Ramp

Although demand is stronger, not all financial indicators will improve immediately. AMD expects gross margin slightly lower in Q4 and in 2027 due to the ramp of MI450 and Helios.

Rack-scale AI systems have more integration costs and components than standalone processors. Management appears to be okay with near-term margin pressure due to the gross profit dollars and operating leverage extending with revenue. A positive Data Center outlook can exist with temporary pressure on gross margin percentage.

Q2 and Q3 Guidance Still Provide a Strong Baseline

The official earnings baseline for AMD gives us a solid starting point for Q2 and Q3. Revenue for Q2 increased 50% year over year to $11.536 billion, Data Center revenue accounted for 58% of the revenue, and non-GAAP gross margin was 56%. AMD reported approximately $1.558 billion of free cash flow.

Roughly $13 billion of expected Q3 revenue with a flexibility range of $300 million, in combination with a non-GAAP gross margin of about 56% still holds. There have not been any formal guidance cuts by September 10.

The conversation surrounding Q3, for the time being, is less relevant. As of now, investors care more about the velocity and magnitude of the MI450 ramp and have set their expectations on the potential of 2027 Data Center growth within the new information shared about expectations management at Citi.

AMD Technical Analysis: $524.08 Is the Immediate Continuation Test

AMD closed September 9 at around $521.10, which was almost equal to the $521.16 reference point on the chart after AMD broke above the downward sloping trendline and the moving average at around $483.07. What stands out to me is the strength in the break out from the $453 region. Buyers even pushed the price to test and break above the previous consolidation zone.

The next level to watch is at $524.08. A close 2 hours above this level would set a continuation target toward $547.70 with the measured-move projection at around $571.87.

RSI (Relative Strength Index) is at 77 and is well above the 70 level we define as overbought. The RSI is also above its’ signal line at 66 making the momentum in this zone very bullish, however with this move much higher, we would expect to see a consolidation or retest. Key support on the downside is at around $485.88-$483.07. A successful retest there would preserve the bullish structure, while a break below $452.99 would materially weaken the setup.

Key Levels

·       Latest close: Around $521.10

·       Immediate resistance: $524.08

·       First upside target: $547.70

·       Measured move target: $571.87

·       Breakout support: $485.88-$483.07

·       Major structural support: $452.99

·       RSI: Around 77, firmly overbought

Why is AMD stock in focus now?

From a fundamental perspective, the investment case on AMD has moved away from the ability to sell AI to the ability to make and deliver enough MI450 and Helios systems to satisfy the demand. The comments and estimates by management around the $2 trillion AI TAM and $70 billion Data Center business in 2027 have brought the outlook for AMD a lot more constructive.

What level confirms further AMD upside?

A two-hour close on the high side of $524.08 suggests that the breakout will continue, and we would then focus on the measured move objective of $571.87 that sits above the intermediate target of $547.70.

Bottom Line

Compared to the previous attempt, AMD has a stronger September 10 setup due to an advanced fundamental and technical outlook. The break of the triangle, a more bullish Citi report, and the beginning of MI450 production shipments suggest an improving fundamental analysis. The main risks are overbought levels, supply constraints, and margin pressure as the rack-scale systems ramp. I am long as long as $483 remains intact, but we should be watching $524.08 as a level to break for the leg to be confirmed and for the price to head toward $547.70 and $571.87.
