What this transaction means for investors

Eisen co-founded Afterpay in 2014 and ran it as co-CEO until Block bought it in 2022. He then joined the board in February 2025, so his stake is essentially the buy now, pay later business converted into Block stock.

More importantly for long-term investors, Afterpay Pre-Purchase, which lets a Cash App Card user pick installments instead of a debit charge at checkout, reached general availability in the quarter, and Cash App commerce enablement volume grew 17%. CEO Jack Dorsey built the growth case on the August 5 earnings call around what he calls modern earners, saying "we see over 100 million modern earners in the U.S."

Still, one pressure point is credit. Consumer lending originations grew 59%, and CFO Amrita Ahuja said she expects that pace to normalize into the back half as borrower cohorts season, which is where consumer strain would surface before it reaches gross profit. Despite surging 66% from lows earlier this year, Block stock is still only up about 3% this past year, highlighting just how shaky the ride has been.
