Bankwell Financial Group (NASDAQ:BWFG) isn’t a household name. The regional bank makes money the old-fashioned, boring way: take in deposits and lend them back to businesses and real-estate developers. However, in all of this, the Connecticut-based bank is navigating a shift from local roots to a broader urban footprint, including an expansion into New York.

As a regional lender, Bankwell provides everything, from checking accounts to complex commercial construction financing. The stock is up 68% over the past 12 months; its trajectory clearly reflecting an operational recovery from the cyclical pressures of 2024. The question for investors is whether this recovery is the beginning of a sustainable growth story over the next few years.

Our proprietary Hidden Gems scoring system assigns Bankwell Financial Group an overall Superscore of 72 out of 100, placing it in the Above Average category. The Superscore is an AI-powered score that evaluates a company's overall strength by combining financial performance, product market position, technological capabilities, leadership quality, and relative valuation. It represents the unification of all our scores into a single score for public companies, with five rating bands: Exceptional (90-100), Strong (75-89), Above Average (60-74), Average (40-59), and Cautious (0-39). A 72 places Bankwell in the Top ~25% of every company we score, meaning it sits ahead of roughly 75 out of every 100 companies we track. This score serves as a data-driven starting point for your research, and we invite you to weigh these strengths against the inherent risks before deciding if the stock deserves a spot in your portfolio.

Why BWFG Has a 72 Superscore

  • Robust earnings recovery: The company posted net income of $35.2 million in 2025, a massive turnaround from the $9.8 million reported in 2024 as provisioning costs normalized.
  • Operational efficiency gains: Management improved the bank’s efficiency ratio to 47.5% in Q2 2026, signaling that recent infrastructure investments are successfully translating into lower relative operating costs.
  • Disciplined funding shift: The bank reduced its dependence on expensive brokered funding, lowering the wholesale ratio to 16.3% as of Q2 2026 through aggressive core deposit growth. For clarity, higher levels of wholesale funding occur when banks are forced to shore up liquidity positions by borrowing large sums from other institutions in the event of deposit outflows.
  • Targeted market entry: The opening of a full-service branch in Brooklyn in early 2026 provides a concrete pathway into the massive New York City banking market, diversifying the company beyond its Connecticut base.
  • Improved asset quality: Nonperforming assets dropped to 0.46% of total assets as of June 30, 2026, proving that the loan portfolio cleanup following the 2024 downturn is essentially complete.

Why Is BWFG's Superscore Not Higher?

  • Cyclical credit sensitivity: The bank maintains a significant 68% concentration in commercial real estate loans, leaving the portfolio vulnerable to localized property-value downturns.
  • Margin volatility: While Bankwell has significantly improved its efficiency ratio, interest rate fluctuations and rising inflation could erode its margins.
  • Intense regional competition: Banking remains a fragmented, high-touch industry, and the firm lacks the scale or unique technological barriers of national competitors.
  • Narrow interest coverage: Interest coverage remains structurally tight for the business model, reflecting persistent sensitivity to the broader interest-rate environment.

Is BWFG Right For Your Portfolio?

This stock warrants a closer look if...

  • You are an income-oriented investor looking for exposure to bank ETFs or regional financial institutions with a clear roadmap for urban market expansion.
  • You prioritize firms that demonstrate the ability to recover from cyclical earnings troughs through disciplined cost management and balance sheet cleanup.

You may want to keep researching before buying if...

  • You are uncomfortable with high concentrations in commercial real estate loans or the inherent interest-rate sensitivity of a regional community bank.
  • You prefer businesses with wide, impenetrable technological moats rather than the relationship-based, high-touch model typical of this sector.

The Superscore provides a useful data-driven signal, but it should be weighed against your own financial goals and risk tolerance rather than acting as a standalone recommendation.

My 5-year prediction for BWFG stock

Bankwell Financial’s business looks far more solid today than it was 18 months ago. The bank has simultaneously improved its funding mix, loan growth, net interest margins, and credit quality.

Net interest margin, which is the difference between interest income and interest expense as a percentage of average earning assets, improved by a solid 83 basis points (bps), from 2.75% in the second quarter of 2024 to 3.58% eight quarters later. Over the same period, total loans grew by 11%, while deposits grew by 12.7%. That is a significant marker that the business has improved significantly.

However, the massive improvement in profitability is what takes the cake. Net income shot up almost 10x to $12.4 million, translating to an earnings per share (EPS) of $1.52, up from just $0.14 two years earlier. Essentially, the entire operation is substantially stronger.

Not surprisingly, BWFG’s stock price has tracked profitability over this period, with return on equity (ROE) climbing to nearly 14%.

All in all, the improvement in the business seems structural, which means it is well set to continue its growth trajectory. As management explained, Bankwell is generating more revenue for every dollar of operating expense.

Additionally, the bank’s credit quality has improved, with the allowance for credit losses (ACL) on its loan portfolio falling to 1.03% from 1.36% over the two years.

There aren’t any pressing factors why the bank shouldn’t sustain the momentum it has built over the past couple of years. While inflationary fears coupled with a high-interest-rate background could still create challenges, especially in its commercial real estate loan portfolio, management seems to be positioning the business to weather these storms.

For a small but growing regional bank, Bankwell seems to be in a really good place to grow. A sustained annual earnings growth of 6%-10% could increase the stock’s valuation, potentially doubling the stock price over the next five years.
