Australian Dollar: Watching 0.7200 resistance against US Dollar – UOB

Source Fxstreet

United Overseas Bank’s (UOB) Quek Ser Leang and Lee Sue Ann note AUD/USD extended its consolidation slightly higher, closing at 0.7165 as short-term momentum improves. They see scope for further gains within a tight intraday band and continue to highlight 0.7200 as a major resistance level for the coming weeks, with the bullish view contingent on the pair holding above a nearby strong support zone.

Short-term consolidation with upside bias

"24-HOUR VIEW: When AUD was at 0.7155 in the early Asian session yesterday, we highlighted that “the current price movements in AUD are likely part of a 0.7135/0.7170 consolidation phase. AUD subsequently traded between 0.7137 and 0.7168 before closing 0.21% higher at 0.7165. The tentative increase in upward momentum suggests AUD could edge higher today. However, any advance is likely to stay within a 0.7145/0.7180 range. Even if AUD breaks above 0.7180, any further advance is unlikely to reach 0.7200."

"1-3 WEEKS VIEW: Last Thursday (19 Aug, spot at 0.7125), we highlighted that “while further AUD strength is not ruled out, it must first break clearly above 0.7150 before a move to 0.7175 can be expected.” After AUD broke clearly above 0.7150, we highlighted on Monday (24 Aug, spot at 0.7165) that “AUD strength remains intact, and the level to watch is 0.7200.” We will continue to hold the same view as long as 0.7120 (‘strong support’ level previously at 0.7105) is not breached."

Bitcoin briefly loses 2025 gains as crypto plunges over the weekend.Bitcoin experienced a sharp decline this weekend, briefly erasing its 2025 gains and dipping below its year-opening value of $93,507. The cryptocurrency fell to a low of $93,029 on Sunday, representing a 25% drop from its all-time high in October. Although it has rebounded slightly to around $94,209, the pressures on the market remain significant. The downturn occurred despite the reopening of the U.S. government on Thursday, which many had hoped would provide essential support for crypto markets. This year initially appeared promising for cryptocurrencies, particularly after the inauguration of President Donald Trump, who has established the most pro-crypto administration thus far. However, ongoing political tensions—including Trump's tariff strategies and the recent government shutdown, lasting a historic 43 days—have contributed to several rapid price pullbacks for Bitcoin throughout the year. Market dynamics are also being influenced by Bitcoin whales—investors holding large amounts of Bitcoin—who have been offloading portions of their assets, consequently stalling price rallies even as positive regulatory developments emerge. Despite these sell-offs, analysts from Glassnode argue that this behavior aligns with typical patterns seen among long-term investors during the concluding stages of bull markets, suggesting it is not indicative of a mass exodus. Notably, Bitcoin is not alone in its struggles, as Ethereum and Solana have also recorded declines of 7.95% and 28.3%, respectively, since the start of the year, while numerous altcoins have faced even steeper losses. Looking ahead, questions linger regarding the viability of the four-year cycle thesis, particularly given the increasing institutional support and regulatory frameworks now in place in the crypto landscape. Matt Hougan, chief investment officer at Bitwise, remains optimistic, suggesting a potential Bitcoin resurgence in 2026 driven by the “debasement trade” thesis and a broader trend toward increased adoption of stablecoins, tokenization, and decentralized finance. Hougan emphasized the soundness of the underlying fundamentals, pointing to a positive outlook for the sector in the longer term.
