Sam Altman Thinks Your PC’s RAM Belongs in AI Data Centers. Crypto Leaders Disagree

Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson and Ripple CTO Emeritus David Schwartz are mocking OpenAI CEO Sam Altman over his RAM comment. Altman had argued that memory sitting in home computers wastes a scarce resource that AI data centers could use better.

The jokes carry a serious edge for crypto. Blockchains such as the XRP Ledger and Cardano depend on independent operators who run nodes on their own machines. If AI data centers keep absorbing memory supply, that hardware gets pricier, which raises the cost of securing the networks behind ADA and XRP.

Why Did Sam Altman’s RAM Comment Draw Fire?

Altman made the remark on the Cheeky Pint podcast. His point was simple: home computers use their memory only a small part of the time, while data centers keep it busy around the clock.

From a global allocation perspective, actually, it’s quite terrible to have everybody have a bunch of the world’s limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer and being used 5% of the time.

Sam Altman’s RAM comment arrived during a deep supply squeeze. Chipmaker SK Hynix recently forecast a memory shortage until 2030, as AI demand continues to outpace production.

Hoskinson answered with a meme that turns Altman’s argument on its head. In it, the Cardano founder claims he uses 64GB of RAM to play Roller Coaster Tycoon, a theme park game from 1999 that needs only a tiny fraction of that memory. The meme adds that he wants Altman to know it was him, meaning he wastes the memory on purpose.

Schwartz took a similar line. He said Altman could have his RAM “when you pry it from my cold, dead hands,” borrowing a famous US gun-rights slogan.

Why Node Operators Have a Stake in the Memory Fight

Notably, Hoskinson’s 64GB matches what the XRP Ledger recommends for its server software. Cardano’s developer portal lists up to 24GB for a mainnet stake pool.

As a result, the Sam Altman RAM spat touches a real cost question for node operators. Hardware costs also feed into the ongoing debate over XRP Ledger decentralization claims.

Relief may eventually come from new supply. Tesla CEO Elon Musk, for instance, expects China to make RAM in large volumes in 2028.

Until then, Sam Altman’s RAM argument pits AI labs against the home users who keep crypto networks running.
